It feels weird that I'm a big Green Lantern fan, and yet it took me so long to get to Kyle's run. I'm glad I waited, because this trade is just gorgeous and I can't wait to have every single one of them on my shelf and expanding my love of this character. Like many recent collected runs DC is trying to give fans the ultimate experience of reading every issue these characters appear in, as well as their smaller roles in other titles. While I find Ron Marz' GL title to be the best and Kyle's guest appearances in REBELS and New Titans to be okay I am happy that I got to experience Kyle interacting with the DC universe slowly but surely.Vol 1 starts off with the infamous Emerald Twilight storyline where Hal's character takes a big character turn after witnessing a massive tragedy. I'm not a big Hal Jordan fan, and the set up they use to establish his changing status quo was enough for me to be alright with it. I understood where Hal was coming from, even though I thought it was paced rather fast, but I guess that's also like ripping off a bandaid for every Hal Jordan fan. It's happening, but only for a few issues. The Next storyline is my favorite of this bunch. It's Kyle learning about the Green Lantern ring, and mythos, and trying to see who he is. He has a fun tussle with Mongol, and he even meets Superman. This was a very nice foundation for the character where he's uncertain, in awe, and a bit confused at times, but having encouragement from Superman was very special. The rest of this volume deals with another certain infamous tragedy, this time related to Kyle, and his aftermath. I thought they handled the aftermath really well, and there's a really good single story issue near the end where Kyle meets another Green Lantern that's just heartbreaking. There is a lot to love in this run, unfortunately I found the beginning to be okay and the last four issues are guest appearances that I liked, but didn't find all that engaging.
Disclaimer: I've got a heavy dose of nostalgia for Kyle Rayner. He was the Green Lantern of my youth and my teenage years cemented my love for comics. So, you can understand the place these comics and this character in particular hold for me.This volume has great paper and high quality re-printings of the original comics. I should know, because I own copies of the originals and went through each issue, page by page, to make certain the trade held up. For the most part, this collection does the trick as far as collecting the early adventures of Kyle Rayner as a Green Lantern and Hal Jordan's fall from grace. As you read this, you're probably thinking in your mind, "Uh oh! What'd they do wrong!" "Someone must pay for this!!" But the price was great for the quality you receive with this purchase. Every issue of the Green Lantern comic is rendered well. It's when Kyle makes his cameo roles in other books that the printers made some goofs. The last two pages of Rebels '95 #1 were omitted. Granted, these two pages do not include Kyle, or continue any part of his personal story - line. However, they do finalize the story of the individual issue and add some nice character beats for the Rebels' characters. These final two pages also present a cliffhanger leading into the next issue of Rebels' and this is, perhaps, the reason why the collection left out these pages. I will tell you that as a youth it only bothered me to a small degree that I didn't have the remainder of the story in the Rebels title. I did pick up further issues the following year and they are a quality read, as well. Given the fact that Tony Bedard resurrected the title with a quality run just a couple years before DC started their New 52 initiative should speak to strong concept presented there and suggest the need for a reprint of that title, as well. Perhaps I've dwell-ed on that thought too long. In any case, there was one further printing error in one of the New Titans reprints in this collection. Two pages were printed out of order within the collection and one or two word bubbles were omitted. A savvy reader will figure this out just fine without having the original issues on hand, like I did, to note these moments of confusion. However, taking these issues into account does not detract from the quality of the comics reprinted here, or of the overall presentation of this collection - which is very fine, indeed.Ron Marz had a strong debut on the title. Although he had quite a drastic turn for where Gerard Jones was taking Hal Jordan, it appears Marz had the blessing of DC and it's editors to take such drastic action with that character. By that I mean turn him into a killer. Whether you consider them crimes of passion, or not, when you boil down what was done to Hal's character it didn't fit in with what many people grew to love about the character. That change did the job, though, bringing on new readers and increasing sales on the title that remained through Marz' time with Kyle. I will say that although I loved this character and Kyle's stories from the get-go as a teenager they do not hold up the best to time and current comics story-telling. Not that they're bad, but I often wished for more words and content as I read these early adventures. I can tell first time readers of these comics that Kyle's story does go more in-depth and that Marz creates a strong humanitarian in Kyle throughout his run on the character that all future writers have been able to pick up on immediately. If you have ever wondered which Green Lantern has the most creative uses of his ring and has been the least militarized and most humanistic of all the Green Lanterns, then look no further than Kyle Rayner. His story arc from fledgling rookie to competent hero is displayed throughout Marz' run (which I hope will be fully collected in these Green Lantern volumes. Currently, three volumes are set to be printed, with a fourth volume possibly on the way), as well as Grant Morrison's run on JLA. All that being said, there's a tentative start to Marz' beginning with the character. He starts off on the right beats, exploring what it means for Kyle to be the only Green Lantern in the universe and why there can be only one, now. The series will get more in depth in future issues and Marz' builds a rogues gallery of Kyle's own that rivals both Hal's Silver Age line-up, as well as the strength of the Flash's core group of villains.Darryl Banks is a fantastic illustrator. I can't think of a better comic artist who conveys facial expressions outside of Kevin MaGuire, of JL International fame. His pop-art sensibilities are right on the money, too, giving strong muscle lines to a heroic adventure book. Despite what seems to be popular opinion (if one is to give internet trolls a grain of salt), I think the "crab mask" designed for Kyle is a quality design feature. It matches a character need, in masking Kyle's face (although Hal Jordan's domino mask can be somewhat effective, it doesn't succeed to the same degree) and sported a unique costume feature that forever made this character identifiable in all his comic appearances. Although other comic artists had trouble rendering the mask, at times, it's always easy to pick Green Lantern out of a crowd in big DC comic events with multiple characters using the same color elements and in other cameo comic appearances. Bill Willingham also makes a stint as a guest artist early on in this collection. His strengths play well to Gil Kane's original Hal Jordan costume design (let alone the alterations that Neal Adams later made the costume). And, on a brief side-note, the original design of Hal Jordan's costume is still the best of his costume designs. The overly busy design by Jim Lee and Cully Hammer just doesn't cut it (although I typically enjoy Cully Hammer's work). Getting back on point, the art in this collection is great. The coloring uses a cool effect that seems singular to comics in the first half of the '90's with some general washes on colors in the background that add to the pop art effect (they remind me of some techniques used by Andy Warhol). As definition in panel backgrounds and color specifics became a norm in contemporary comics this style seemed to fade, but I wouldn't mind seeing it brought back again from time to time.Overall, ("I know, get to the point already!") this is a fun read and a great addition to anyone's Green Lantern collection, Kyle Rayner collection, 90's superhero collection, or just plain graphic novel collection. It does not reach the comics story pinnacle that is the Sandman, or the superhero love-song that is Starman, but it means something to me and I believe could speak the same to you and your youth the same way. Definitely a "upper elementary and up" read with it's renderings of murder and death, unless you're willing to have some interesting talks with your young children that they're not fully able to comprehend, just yet.
Never read Kyle Rayner as Green Lantern (the issues sold out at the time and I gave up hunting them and moved on). The first collection contains the final chapters of predecessor Hal Jordan's as GL, which I still kinda but would like to have seen executed differently. That sums up this volume. It's a fast read. Fairly decent. The cold blooded murder that happens is disturbing to see in a main DC book and isn't telegraphed that much. Again, enjoyable but what would it be like executed differently?Is it worth checking out? Yes. It's really a 3.5 or 3.75. The crossover issues with the Titans and Rebels in the latter half drags the quick pacing in the first half.The art as a whole is not ready for prime time. But that was post-Image DC at the time. Series regular Darryl Banks does improve quite a bit from his first issue in the collection.
Product description is incorrect. This volume includes Green Lantern (Vol.3) 48-57; New Titans 116-117; and R.E.B.E.L.S ‘94 1. Otherwise, a nice volume that is nicely printed and bound. If you already own the TPB of Emerald Twilight and the TPB of A New Dawn, you own most of this volume already.
A collection of Marz and Banks work is essential. This is an incredible addition to my collection.
