This is a typical KA-land book where the alpha males shift from super sweet to semi-jerky at the drop of a hat…but all in an I’m a man and I’m going to provide and protect you kind of way. This is a place where normal rules don’t apply really.Things to Expect in KA-Land⣠- Ex’s are 5 shades of cray-cray and I mean CrAzY⣠- The Hot guy will say something life shattering sweet one minute and then act like he is from another time the next and you’ll want to first kiss him and then kick him in the balls. That feeling goes a little back and forth but most of the stuff that is memorable is sweet.***“Two kinds of women get under your skin. The ones who do damage, they don't feel good there but once you're stupid enough to let them in you got no choice but to take the time it takes to work them out. Then there are the ones who don't do damage, who feel good there, feed the muscle, the bone, the soul, not rip it or break it or burn it. The ones you don't wanna work out.â€***⣠- The underappreciated girl with a past will resist the initial allure of said hot guy because she has something tragic in her past or is slightly broken. But at least she is not 20 something….One of the best things about KAs MCs is that most of the time they are in their 30s and 40s.***“All my life, or as long as I can remember, I thought something special was going to happen to me. I just had this feeling, deep in my bones. I didn’t know what it was but it was going to be beautiful, spectacular, huge.†I leaned in further. “All… my… life.†I shook my head again and put my hand on the bar. “It didn’t. I waited and it didn’t happen. I waited more and it didn’t happen. I waited more and it still didn’t happen. I tried to make it happen and it still didn’t happen. Now I know it isn’t going to. It’s never going to happen because there isn’t anything special out there to happen.â€***⣠- The KA heroine will freak out at some point and time and ramble on in a cute or over informative way.⣠- There will be sex…lots of hot sex…even some in the shower and that is when I know this isn’t real life. Because have you ever tried to have sex in the shower…it is slippery and I think you are more likely to get a concussion than anything else.⣠- At some point there will be some crass talk…I personally look forward to this. It is usually dirty and mostly thrown in the face of someone who has wronged the MC so I totally look forward to the verbal smack down. There were a few of them in Sweet Dreams and they were all awesome.⣠- You can usually count on a kidnapping, girl fight, alpha dominance fight or a tasering. If you are lucky you get a combo of them.Sweet Dreams worked for me for a few reasons. I liked Laurie most of the time. She had a bad marriage and is a bit gun shy but she stands up for herself doesn’t let anyone walk all over her and is good to her friends. There is also Tate who made me happy just a little more than he made me angry but overall he just did it for me. It was probably all the crass talking.The murder mystery while interesting totally plays second fiddle to the love story. This IS love story first and foremost with a mystery. Still I always love learning about the pasts of the characters to see why they are both a little broken and each one helps to fix the other. Tate’s history was just as tragic as Laurie’s was but in a different way.KA did fortunately reign in all of the descriptions in this one. There are still a lot and I always know what a character is wearing, or the general vibe of a room but she didn’t go nearly as overboard as she did in The Gamble.The side characters and the small town always add a lot to the story and this is no exception. I love that I feel like these are real places and you could go and visit Carnal and have a drink at Bubba’s and run in to Jim-Billy there and maybe watch Twyla throw down some attitude at bad tipping customers.All and all this is one of my favorite KA books to date.
4 Stars (Originally Read 1/11/2014)4.5 Stars (Review Re-Read 6/8/2017)Overall Opinion: This has to be my favorite KA book and my favorite book to re-read period, and I can't believe I've never written a review for it! Is it the best book I've read? No. But it never fails in making me feel good -- and that's why we read books, right?! Kristen Ashley is always my go-to when I'm in need for some good closure and a HEA. This book is not the best ending she's written, but it still gives me that smile on my face when I get to the end. AND...I just love Tate so darn much! I am incredibly happy to report that he is everything I love in KA heroes even after a re-read! I was truly worried he wouldn't hold up...especially after being so disappointed in myself after re-reading Motorcycle Man and Tack not being the man I had in my head the second go-round. It's no secret that I am not a huge fan of suspense in romance, but this book has just the right balance between romance/suspense/other stuff to keep me interested and eating up the super long book in no time!**See Goodreads.com/NMmomof4 for my full review with spoilers**Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Lauren and Tate's story. Lauren is on the road trying to find herself a new home after a devistating divorce, and she lands herself in a small town in the Colorado mountains. She gets a waitressing job at the local bar, and she starts to plant her roots by making new friends and finally being herself. She meets Tate, who is a part owner of the bar, and they bump heads right away. When a serial killed hits too close to home, things between them change drastically. There is a good bit of ex drama (on both ends), some big secrets revealed, some friend and family drama, some sexy times, AND a serial killer on the loose...but they do eventually get a HEA ending.POV: This was told primarily in Lauren's POV with a few sections in other character's POV.Overall Pace of Story: Good. This is another long one! On Amazon it is listed at 678 pages. I never have issues getting through it though, because SO many things happen! I never skimmed, and it flows well throughout.Instalove: No, they take a while to develop stronger feelings.H rating: 4.75 😜 stars. Tate. My #1 all time favorite KA hero. That's not so say he doesn't get OTT in his alpha jerkish ways at times, but I just can't help falling for him every time I read this.h rating: 4 stars. Lauren. I like her. Yes -- she is a little clueless at times, but I loved how she took care of her boys.Sadness level: Low/moderate. I teared up a few times, but never needed any tissues. I have re-read this several times, and I think I remember tearing up more with those first reads.Push/Pull: YesHeat level: Hot. They have some hot tension, chemistry, and scenes -- but not so much it takes away from the story.Descriptive sex: YesOW/OM drama: YesSex scene with OW or OM: NoCheating: Not IMOSeparation: YesClosure: This has great closure with a jump ahead epilogue and a HEA. SWEET DREAMS is book two in the Colorado Mountain Series and is (kind of) an enemies to lovers contemporary standalone with just a hint of suspense. If I was forced at gunpoint to name my top three Kristen Ashley favorites, I'd name this one as number two...number one...number three...well let's just say this book is one of my favorites!! I've read this beloved tale at least four times, possibly more. Right off the bat, I'll say I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED Lauren's character. She found the strength to transform herself (and not just physically) from a timid, insecure woman to a strong, confident Goddess. It was like watching a plain boring caterpillar break free from her cocoon to become this beautiful majestic butterfly! It's a journey I never get tired of reading. Then of course there's Tate, Lauren's bad boy alpha boss who also moonlights as a bounty hunter. There's just something about a possessive, take charge kind of man with a silver tongue that makes my heart pound! Plus, the sparks that ignite when these two come together is HAWT! Next is the crazy cast of secondary characters, each one who, by the time Ms. Ashley's done, has me feeling like they're my best friends. Throw in a plot with a few suspenseful elements and surprises and you have the perfect contemporary romance! Told from Lauren's POV with a happy ever after.
