The Dragon Grammar Book: Grammar for Kids, Dragons, and the Whole Kingdom by Diane Mae Robinson is a what it says it is, a textbook for grammar. This book covers all the basics about grammar describing things like Adjective, Adverb, Nouns, Contractions and so on. While discussing the complex English language and how to use it, Diane Robinson tries to bring the explanations down to a level kids can understand. To keep it interesting there is a story line from one chapter to the next involving Sir Princess Petra and the dragon Snarls dealing with magic, farts, and other mischief. Together they help kids, and adults, grasp the often challenging concepts, as well as, being able to laugh while they learn.Coming from a background of having a BA in English, and having homeschooled my children, I could see the value in this book. This is not meant to be read cover to cover like a novel, rather it is a textbook. Having kids in the middle school range I can see this would be a great resource for the fifth to seventh grade level. The explanations are short and concise followed up by humor examples that will appeal to boys and girls in this age range. As a parent and home educator I appreciate the thoroughness of the explanations and how it lays out the chapters in a logical format where they all flow from one concept to the next, keeping not only the story line cohesive, but the lessons build on each other. Additionally, I like the review that is included at the end of each chapter. This allows for the student to test their knowledge and reinforce what they learned. The quizzes are short and effective, allowing the teacher to see that they get the idea but not being so overwhelming with just busy work. There are also two levels of tests at the end of the book that make a good end of year review.Overall this book is a fun way to introduce grammar to kids, there are fun illustrations that go along with the storyline. The chapters are short and provide review material. This is a great resource for families that are home educating, but also for those with children in school. Since the sections are so short it makes for a great review source to supplement their regular school work and to use a reference guide. The humor is right on a child’s level, so they can grasp the concepts without being bord. I would recommend this book to anyone that struggles with grammar, or with helping their kids learn grammar. The only change I would make to this book is to make a supplement, or appendix with the quiz questions separate from the main chapter without the answers readily available to see. It would be nice to have the ability to print or copy each sections quiz and the skills test on their own. Overall a great resource for learners of all ages.
Should I have used a comma after "great-granddaughters?" Or an apostrophe before the "s" in grandmothers? If these type questions plague you when writing, Diane Mae Robinson's newest, The Dragon Grammar Book should find its place on your writing table.I was amazed at the content in the ten chapters. I'm not certain what I expected, but certainly got more for my money than a dragon story telling me how to properly apply grammatical rules. What I bought for my great-granddaughter will sit on my table the next four to five years waiting for the three-year-old (OOPS! Is that hyphenated?), to grow into the book. She inherits her copy marked and loved by me and hope she relishes my intent.I agree with another reviewer that the answers to chapter tests be separated and not so tempting to peek. I found myself cheating in chapter 9, "Dangling, Misplaced, and Squinting Things..." those darn dangling participles! A chapter, no doubt, I'll return to often. At the end of the book is Level 1 & 11 Skill Tests. Those answers are separated following the quiz. And don’t kid yourself. I missed a few!Chapter 8 with its nine pages of Em-Dash, En-Dash, Colon, Hyphen, and my ballyhoo—the Semicolon—is my favorite. And chapter 6, "Ellipsis, Brackets, Braces" actually had information I'm not remembering, but that will definitely improve my editing skill (yea)! And I am delighted when I flip to page 72 and there it is..."Commas with 'And,' 'But,' 'Or' " (And did you remember there is a space between the single and double comma at the end of a quote within a quote?) OOPS! Caught another of my faux pas, but not the toughest, that dad-gum comma before "Or." Do I or don't I? (H’m…see what I mean?)Her format is strong for either audio or visual learners—one learning technique reinforcing the other.Audio LearnerThe Grammar Rule: Commas are used to separate two independent clauses connected by a coordinating conjunction such as or.Visual LearnerThe Example: Snarls will consider going to art school, or he may just stay in cooking school. And there you have it. And mixed up with all these rules and examples, Robinson lets kids connect, or reconnect, with her fantasy all-star cast of characters from The Pen Pieyu Adventurers series: “I think dragons might taste nasty, so I’m glad we aren’t going to eat Snarls.†This example from “Comma Confusion.â€I regress to kid fun with the gray illustrations by Breadcrumbs Ink using felt pens to color red eyes on Snarls, the dragon, and yellow or purple hair on Sir Princess Petra and friends.Overall, a completely digestible grammar book for middle school to great-grandmothers starting with page 15, “Grammar Terminology"; 15 pages of concise definitions for quick reference (if in doubt)—and I’m finding myself rather doubtful of my grasp of English grammar after reading Robinson’s book. I’m glad I bought the paperback edition. This book in hand is an excellent tool for my writing library.RECOMMENDED
The Dragon Grammar Book is the ideal grammar book for kids, dragons, and adults who need a refresher in English Grammar. This reference manual introduces kids through adults to the basic grammar rules of the English language. The English grammar lessons featuring the fantasy creatures makes it an enjoyable book for the whole kingdom. The clear examples and fun activities make relearning the basics like terminology, sentences structure, verb agreement, and other skills more entertaining. This is an excellent resource for all ages, whether you are writing a resume or a book report for school. This book is by no means a comprehensive study of grammar but is a helpful resource to understanding grammar in a fun new way. The book's explanation and example sentences with the help of Diane Mae Robinson characters from her Pen Pieyu Adventure series make the grammar a bit easier to understand. With all the grammar books out there this one stands out. Diane explains the rules and terminology in a way that whether you are 5 for 45 you can understand the concept and not feel like it is over your head or being talked down to. When reading I found myself understand concepts I had forgotten over the years from lack of use. This book is well worth the cost and should be one everyone's reference shelf.
