About the Author

Karl G. Heider has done extensive field research in New Guinea, at the Mayan site of Tikal in Guatemala, and in Thailand, France, Arizona, and South Dakota. He was a member of the Harvard-Peabody Expedition in 1961 that documented the Dani in the film Dead Birds and was co-author of the bookGardens of War: Life and Death in the New Guinea Stone Age. Professor Heider has contributed articles to theSouthwestern Journal of Anthropology, Man, Anthropos, and American Anthropologist. He is currently Associate provost and Dean of Undergraduate Studies at the University of South Carolina. He has served as Chair on the committee of ethics for the American Anthropological Association as well as President of the general Anthropology division of AAA.

This thin, slickly produced volume is not your usual backyard astronomy guide. It addresses a very narrow subject and audience. From the product description it sounds like it was meant for younger readers, but it is perfect for nerds of any age who would like a practical guide to locating constellations. Granted, the choice of constellations is arbitrary and confined to the northern hemisphere. But it groups the ones of major interest into four sections according to season. The genius of the approach is that is uses a “star-hopping” technique that allows you to connect one constellation to another, teaching you to recognize patterns without having to rely on maps or apps. They can all be traced back to the one formation that everyone seems able to recognize, the Big Dipper. This makes it all easy to remember, but there is a handy, glow-in-the-dark map included just in case.I liked the nice pairing of astronomy with the ancient myths that each constellation is based on. It seemed a missed opportunity that the direction-finding aspects and apparent seasonal movements of the stars were not mentioned in such a practical guide, which is why I am deducting one from my rating. Also, don’t look here for a detailed explanation of planets or other celestial bodies. For spotting constellations, this is a useful contribution. But for explaining the celestial sphere to beginners it’s still hard to beat the classic, entertaining works of H. A. Rey.

This was weird. For a book with Smithsonian on it, I expect it to be more, er, correct? It was very basic which made it easy to follow and had some beautiful pictures and a good layout but I found the star chart vs the drawing of Cassiopeia constellation contradicted each other so they appeared fliped, one going right and the other left. and being born in October I was disappointed it did not have my Scorpio constellation, and a few other zodia signs either. Still it was fun cheap gift for a friend, but if your serious about studying the stars this book has issues.

my 9 year old daughter is really interested in the Stars and planets. She has just gobbled this book up as fast as she could. Great starter book on intro to the stars.

My 3 year old niece loves this book. She had begun showing interest in the stars and this book was exactly what she and her parents wanted to help her learn more about the constellations.

The young one was curious in astrology, this book was a perfect Christmas gift!

This is such a beautiful book with great illustrations. I got it as a gift for a 9 year old, but it is really great for people of all ages to learn how to find constellations

I love this book! Lots of great instruction and adorable animals to make. I made a ferret mama and baby and they turned out so cute!

There are a lot of felted animal books out there and I have copies of most of them. This is an easy to use informative book. It would definetly be suitable for beginners but I think that more advanced needlefelters would appreciate this author's unique approach.

Nice book, but I have a few beefs with it. First, although the colored pictures are nice, they are not put on the same page as the directions. The colored pictures are in the front pages, so when you want to refer to the colored picture, you have to constantly turn back. Yes, there's clear black and white photos, but I would have paid 5 bucks more for them to put them together. That was just dumb.... here we all are, flipping back and forth!Next, being new to this, I'm adding the items to my shopping list.... and see the Florist Wire does NOT list a gauge,only length needed.That said, the designs are cute, directions easy, and pictures otherwise large and nice.

There is a very nice selection of different and adorable animals to make. They look very lifelike and the instructions are very clear and well written. The hardest thing for me is deciding which project to make first.

Not as easy to follow for a beginner as I had hoped. However if you already know what you are doing, this would likely be very helpful. The animals are quite adorable, and it was worth the purchase but I'm a bit too much of a novice to really utilize it.

This is a great book with step by step instructions for making 30 small pets. What I like most is that there are full-size parts printed for each pet. You can create parts, referring to full-size parts diagram as a reference. This eliminates the guess work and all of your little critters feet are the same size. In addition, there is a material list for each animal.

The animals are indeed adorable, but most of them are just variations of cats and dogs. I was hoping for more woodland creatures and farm animals to be mixed in, but instead there are about 10 different dog breeds and almost as many cats. The instructions are clear and I like the "actual size" templates that they provide. I just wish there was a little more variety in a book called "Felted Animals."

This book is wonderful! I have made a couple of little critters and the directions are spot on. I love it and would recommend it for beginners and experienced alike!

About the Author

Stefan E. Schulenberg (Ph.D., Clinical Psychology-Clinical/Disaster Specialty Track, University of South Dakota, 2001) is a licensed psychologist in the state of Mississippi, an Associate Professor in the University of Mississippi’s Psychology Department, and a Logotherapy Diplomate. Dr. Schulenberg is the Director of the University of Mississippi’s Clinical-Disaster Research Center (UM-CDRC), an integrated research, teaching, and training center with emphases in disaster mental health and positive psychology.Dr. Schulenberg’s research interests include disaster mental health, perceived meaning, purpose in life, positive psychology, and psychological assessment. He served as a mental health consultant on a National Science Foundation research grant issued in response to Hurricane Katrina and conducted evaluation research funded by the Mississippi Department of Mental Health relating to the effects of the Gulf oil spill (Deepwater Horizon oil spill). He conducts workshops and provides training on disaster preparedness, psychological first aid, disaster response, meaning and purpose in life, resilience, and posttraumatic growth.Dr. Schulenberg is a disaster mental health volunteer and supervisor in the American Red Cross, and has worked with various other volunteer organizations, such as Mississippi’s Disaster Response Network, United Way, and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. He teaches the graduate cognitive assessment course for the University of Mississippi’s doctoral program in clinical psychology, where he has also developed seminars in disaster mental health and positive psychology. At the undergraduate level, Dr. Schulenberg teaches courses in disaster mental health, positive psychology, psychology and law, and abnormal psychology, as well as sections of the Honor’s Freshman Seminar for the University of Mississippi’s Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College.

Accidents can happen anywhere and this textbook tries to prevent any from happening within the lab. The book first starts with real life incidents in which an accident occurs. Then it proceeds to explain what caused the event, how to reduce the risk of it occurring, and what to do if a similar event occurs. The list of scenarios portray almost every possible accident in a lab ranging from hair catching on fire, to electrical hazards, to hazardous chemical explosions.Depending on the size of your laboratory, many of these scenarios may never be a concern for you. However, this assures that no matter what you are doing in your lab, you will be able to review the possible hazards beforehand and prevent any accidents from happening.

This is the second addition, and the first was well received. They added a few more pages since the last publication. Book is set out in a nice fashion, with the easier concepts first. You can also skip to a section as needed. I got this for my college student yet read the first few chapters myself. How to avoid human error, what to watch for, the why of concepts even for situations you haven't been in yet. What to do after an incident, which can be just as important if not more so than avoiding one. This book is definitely a keeper, there is a large amount of information to take in and will always be good for review.

Well written college level textbook on laboratory safety. This would have been nice to have when I was going to school.This manual stresses the importance of safety and the ability to recognize potential hazards and preventative steps. This also goes over how to deal with emergencies in the lab should an accident occur.While this is meant for college level I believe this would be a good read for a college bound high school student or home school student. I have a very basic lab in my home for my students and I believe this is worth the read to emphasize safety.

I think back to my days as a chemistry student and later as a lab technician and have to marvel at the fact that I escaped unscathed. We routinely handled concentrated acids, poisonous substances and highly flammable liquids. A book like this probably would have been good to have around as it lays out a systematic way to anticipate problems, assess risks and deal with accidents. My only concern is that those people most in need of this book probably will not internalize the content.

Robert Hill Jr and David Finster's "Laboratory Safety for Chemistry Students - 2nd Ed" is a thorough and detailed textbook on lab safety for chemistry classrooms. It covers a huge range of topics of ethics, hazards, toxins, etc. It is a intensive textbook that is worth a look for anyone working in a classroom lab.

This is what is claims to be....a safety review. Pretty basic but good all around - not really specialized and yes, a lot of common sense but that is good because it doesn't assume the student knows anything about working in a lab. Solid.

Any good cookbook can excite the taste buds and inflame the imagination, but it takes a special one to present the recipes so clearly and enticingly without making the preparation look like a big production.There are lots of mouth-watering recipes in here that have very simple, economic ingredients and prep.There are even very helpful timing suggestions and hints so that the cook(s) can enjoy the meal with their family.Love little tidbits like suggestions for variation on flavored butters. For example, although the recipe is for a grilled strip steak with herb butter using parsley, she also suggests how to use the concept to make the butter spicy, tangy, earthy, savory or sweet. Very simple, very clever, very helpful.Highly recommended.

I have Lucinda's other two Mad Hungry books and was so excited to see that she added a 3rd! I use Mad Hungry Men and Boys very often and some of the recipes have become family regulars (I'm already planning on gifting that cookbook to my children when they move out). This book has a few repeats, but as another review stated, she gives ideas on how to change or make substitutions. That is very useful to me, because it's real life. Who doesn't substitute stuff in recipes? So far I've made the Shephard's Pie and the Stuffed Lamb with Rice (yum and yum)! I've always been too intimidated to make a lamb roast, but I've made enough of her recipes (steaks, veggies, desserts, breakfast, chicken, etc) to trust her recipes. I can't recommend this trio of cookbooks enough!

I cannot say enough about any recipe from Lucinda, I miss her show I wish it was still on TV! If you have a man in your family that loves meat and potatoes with some variety thrown in they'll love whatever you make from this and the original Mad Hungry cookbooks.

I'm loving this! I have already raised a family on home cooking but I'm learning a lot from this whole series and picking up very good new recipes that are now part of my normal rotation.

I am a big fan of Lucnda Scala Qunn and I have all of her books. When I heard she had a new one coming out I preordered it right a wa and got one as a gift for my sister-in-law so we could cook together long distance. My book arrived last week and is already a new favorite! So many lovel recipes mixed in with practical advice. Spicy ginger porkchops are on the menu for tonight and other recipes bookmarked for the coming week. This book is a great mixture of inspiration and practicality. Whether you are an experienced cook or just starting out, if you have a family or any group at all asking what is for dinner you will love this book!

Loved the Feeding Men and Boys book, but this left something to be desired. Recipes were too basic for me...I don't need recipes to cook most things, but this would be good if you're a beginner. Unfortunately, I returned this. Not a slam at Lucinda - she's great! This book just wasn't for me.

I missed this one

I love cooking and am fairly good at it. This book inspired me to keep at it especially with my young kids. Lucinda articulates everything I have always loved about cooking. The additions from her sons gives a mother with young children a peek into the future. Many friends of mine aspire to like cooking or to stay in budget, I will be recommending this book to all of them.
