About the Author

Matt Carter serves as the Pastor of Preaching and Vision at the Austin Stone Community Church in Austin, Texas, which has grown from a core team of fifteen to more than eight-thousand attending each Sunday since he planted it in 2002. Matt has co-authored multiple books including a commentary on the Gospel of John in The Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary series and two group studies, Creation Unraveled and Creation Restored, which traced the gospel message through the book of Genesis. He holds an M.Div. from Southwestern Seminary and a Doctorate in Expositional Preaching from Southeastern Seminary. He was a best-selling author and recognized by thousands. Thomas Johnson was a simple slave boy who was unjustly shackled in colonial America. He was known by few and treated like an animal. His slave master worked him to the bone on the Virginia tobacco fields.Jesus Christ liberated Thomas Johnson. He freed him from the power and the penalty of sin. President Abraham Lincoln rescued Thomas Johnson from the sin of slavery. The Emancipation Proclamation, which Lincoln regarded as the crowning achievement of his presidency, liberated Thomas from his slave master. It's been a long time since a book made me weep as I did in the final pages of Steal Away Home. There is so much beauty in this story, in the writing of it, and—most of all—in the Gospel which saturates it, that there really was no other way to respond but through tears of joy for God's victory over sin and death, mingled with tears of sorrow for the brokenness which still mars our world until Christ returns to consummate that victory.I have read a lot of books by and about Charles Haddon Spurgeon. But I can truthfully say I've never encountered anything like this book, both in its scope and style.The book's authors, Matt Carter & Aaron Ivey, are two of the elders at The Austin Stone Community Church, a church whose ministry has often encouraged and inspired me. While visiting the Stone last May for what they call a Worship Pastor Intensive, Aaron shared with us about how co-writing this book had been such a blessing in his life; I pre-ordered it on the spot.While the book is somewhat biographical, its genre is difficult to identify due to its unique nature. In the introduction, Carter states that the book's style was inspired by Michael Shaara's excellent book The Killer Angels, a novelized story of the Civil War focusing on the lives of several historical figures. Steal Away Home is written as a novel in which the main characters are the 19th century preachers Charles Spurgeon and Thomas Johnson.If you're like me, you're reading that second name and saying, "Who?"The fact that Johnson's name is relatively unknown is a real tragedy! His story is truly fascinating, and the impact he had on the Kingdom of God is immense, both as a missionary to Cameroon and as a much-needed encourager and friend to the "prince of preachers."Thomas Johnson had been a slave for 28 years in Virginia when the end of the Civil War brought about his emancipation. Though he had heard the name "Charles Haddon Spurgeon" (when he was forced to accompany his master and a Baptist preacher to a book burning in which the works of Spurgeon—an outspoken abolitionist who openly challenged slave-holding "Christians" in the American South—were read to slaves before being thrown into the fire), he never dreamed he would have the opportunity to meet with him, much less become his friend.Providentially, God allowed Johnson to be sponsored to attend Spurgeon's Pastor's College in London, to be trained and commissioned as a missionary to Africa. During his time in London, and for decades later, Johnson became one of Spurgeon's closest friends and confidants. Spurgeon's lifelong struggle with depression and physical ailments are well known. But the way Johnson spoke truth into Spurgeon's life, teaching him about true freedom in Christ, has remained mostly obscured from history until now. I'm so grateful to Carter & Ivey for telling his story!While the narrative and much of the dialogue for this book required some "artistic license" from the authors, as often as possible the words and "voice" of the characters come from their own writing, primarily their frequent correspondence (Spurgeon kept all of Johnson's letters in the desk in his study), and from Johnson's own autobiography, Twenty-Eight Years a Slave or the Story of My Life in Three Continents (Classic Reprint). The book was thoroughly researched at the Spurgeon Library at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and the fact that so many prominent Spurgeon scholars have endorsed the book lends a lot of credibility to the historicity of the story.I can't imagine more capable hands for the telling of this story than Carter and Ivey. I know of no other ministry so invested in story-telling as Austin Stone (learning more about their Story Team is one of the main reasons I attended the Intensive in the Spring). The story is beautifully told, and I wholeheartedly commend it to you.

Carter and Ivey, in Shaara like fashion, provide a glimpse into the lives of Charles Spurgeon and Thomas Johnson. Reading this book was both enjoyable and inspiring. This genre is unique in that it's informed by history and detailed by the authors. The writing and the themes contained are easy to read, see, and be encouraged by. The story itself is masterful. This was a book that I would have welcomed dozens of more pages. The authors did the research and kindly provide readers with a heartfelt tale of friendship, God's sovereignty, and redemption. I'll be certain to pass this along to friends and family alike.

I had this book on my wish list as a "just in case" book. I was surprised when I received it from my wife for Christmas. Since we celebrated early this year I decided to bring it along on our Christmas babysitting vacation (grandkids). While it seemed a bit slow to begin with it soon turned into a compelling story revealing a side of CHS rarely seen. This book helped me to see that while Spurgeon was a great man, he was only a man. It turned him into a human being. The interaction between Thomas Johnson and Spurgeon was second only to David and Jonathan! I do not read very fast and was pleasantly surprised to finish this book well before Christmas (even between diaper changes, etc). The account of the Jubilees of Spurgeon's birthday and Johnson's emancipation was so moving that I found myself weeping at the end of the chapter. I realize this is a somewhat fictional account but I am sure there was adequate research to qualify this as high quality biographical "fiction". This book has given me a greater comprehension of slavery in the South and a deeper appreciation for my own life and relationship with my wife.freed-indeed.blogspot.com

This cover is actually really beautiful! I believe I got the medium size. It fit my bible perfectly! However it was not what I expected. I kind of expected the cover to be a little more vibrant, like a lighter blue and for the picture to be a little more vibrant. It is a little dull and dark however it is beautiful! I am quite pleased with my purchase.

Size is a little big for my book but it doesn't cause any harm, just annoying for a perfectionist. Plenty of room for book and notes and pens/pencils. Color, wording, and image just like picture. If your book measures 1/4 bigger than given dimensions of cover it should still fit.

I was anxious to receive my new Bible cover as it was a Christmas gift from my friend. I ordered the medium because my Bible is quite small. I was disappointed that it was still too big for my smaller Bible. It is very nice and a pretty cover but sadly I have to return it. My Bible just floats around in it. I do not see any cover with smaller dimensions.

Item is nice, but the large is MUCH bigger than described - a good inch. This makes my bible move around haphazardly and the case look deflated and sloppy.

Not what I expected. No theme to a page, just drawings, all put on a page. You may have snakes and Eagles on same page.Basically it's ecactly what you'd be looking at to pick out a Tat, at a Tattoo Palour. Some designs are very thick wide lined, while others are very fined line.I'd give 2 Stars but paper is nice stock. If you use markers, beware slide protection under page for leakge.One thing I did find very good, is gives you a chance to practice your technique such as shading.

I loved this when it came in the designs are great and real easily to use as a stencil as well for beginners to just start off with. The lines in the book are bold like many of the traditional style tattoos and that is a basic to know and understand for people practicing line work. As for the coloring in the pictures my kids love it I make copies of the designs and let them color those in. I would highly recommend this product for anyone and every one the variety is just immense in this book and it is worth the couple bucks for it

This is a great book of tattoos! I am really into this genre of coloring right now, and this books did not disappoint! It has every theme of tattoo, you can imagine, some take up the whole page, but many others, are a bit smaller, so there may be 3-4 on one page, with the same theme. Its just a fun book, some are easy, some are a little more intricate. The paper is nothing special, but ok, and I use a sharp edge knife to remove the pages and had no issues.

There are some very nice traditional style tattoos in this book. Many of them are large, others are medium in size. This makes it nice if you simply want to color them. If you are a new to tattooing and are looking for designs (flash) buy this book because there are a lot of traditional style tattoo designs that are worth copying. The large designs can be reduced in size, the medium sized designs can also be reduced in size but would make nice upper arm, shoulder, leg and calf tattoos just as they are. Trace them, modify them, make them your own. Some of the designs have lines that are too intricate to outline as actual tattoos. If you are just going to color them then that won't matter. The pages are a bit thin but it's worth the modest price. If you plan to use these designs as actual tattoos the book will pay for itself over and over again.

My husband likes the skulls! He likes this book so so! He says the pages are too thin But he still loves the Tattoo designs! He said it's like going into a tattoo parlor and picking one off the wall except your coloring it

The pages are thick and one sided so you can use markers without worrying about it bleeding on the next page. It is built like an actual book, the quality of it is just amazing.

My stepfather had a stroke recently. Coloring has helped him regain some cognitive functions and has helped keep him occupied. He's covered in tattoos, and he got a kick out of this gift!

Even more wonderful tattoo art to color and make your own. As many tattoo coloring books as there are on Amazon you get few repeat pictures. I actually found the idea for my next tattoo in this book.

I cannot say enough good things about this book. I was going through some very rough times with my 14yo son, and was really at a loss for what to do with him. We nearly sent him away to boarding school because we just didn't know what to do. Reading this book... it was like Dr. Riley had already met with me and talked with me about my son. The example conversations in this book were almost word-for-word discussions we'd had and ridiculous statements my son had made. It was so comforting to know 1) we weren't the only ones going through this 2) there is a clinical diagnosis for his behavior (ODD) and 3) there were solutions and conversations we could immediately implement. We followed his suggestions and I can happily report that THEY WORK! Things are not always perfect, but with a teenager... they never will be. But there has been a marked improvement in both his behavior and how I and my husband react to his behavior which has changed the entire mood in our house for all of us. THANK YOU for this book!!!

I have a defiant teen and she was driving me crazy. I read this book and it seemed like the author knew my child personally! Very good practical tips and education. This book helped me see my teen daughter as a person and gave me insight in how she thinks and how to handle it. She still has issues but not as severe but ultimately the book helped me not be so mad. A must read for any parent that has an ODD child.

This author gave me so much insight into what a child with this disorder is thinking. He also gives tons of strategies on how to deal with outbursts and rude behavior. I would highly recommend this book. Easy to read. Easy to understand. I continue to use this book as a reference.

I am a grandmother to a Defiant Child, my loveable grandson. I am a retired psychiatric social worker and am familiar with the diagnosis and related behaviors. However, the successful understanding of why the oppositional behaviorscontinue to occur was an eye opener for me. Dr Riley truly understands these children and has provided parental understanding and techniques that help the child make better choices. I still pick this book up and review the responses and the whys of these behaviors. This is quite revolutionary! Dr Riley is not the only one who provides insight and help to parents and other caretakers and I applaud all of them. Dr Riley just helps me to understand and gives me clear cut remedies so I can be helpful.

I have two adopted children who were in the foster care system. Sometimes it is hard to determine what is defiance and what is normal behavior for a child. They do need to exert independence and they do want to fit in with their peers, so for me, I bought this book to help me parent them. There are so many times I have wanted to laugh (and sometimes cry) because this book is spot on. It's not a fluffy book that says try this and try that. It has good examples of how children/teens act and very good recommendations on how to parent. It is a good book for any parent, but for me, my children do show signs of defiance and the book is helping my husband and I identify those things we can do to be strong parents for our kids. It identifies areas where parents disagree and stresses the importance of working together. After all kids are professionals at finding a crack that they can wedge into to get what they want. You won't be sorry for reading this book.

We've been using some of the methods mentioned in this book for 2 weeks now. Things have become much better. So far only one meltdown. We usually have at least one every day. We've taken away his opportunities for getting into arguments with us and have given him clear choices, and after some consideration he has chosen the ones with the best outcome for everyone every time. He's still playing his games and telling us we are wrong, but not giving him any emotional reaction at all has made his outbursts so much shorter.There are some things in this book I don't care much for. I don't think the word punishment should belong in a modern book or household for that matter. But there are definitely some strategies that has worked for us so far. It's mostly about giving very clear direction, staying calm and letting your child know that you as the parent are ready to take control no matter what.We are no longer giving him anything to fight against and it works. Has his behavior changed much? No and yes. He still tries to argue and sneak around and get the upper hand, but our reaction to it has made things easier and means situations are not escalating.There might be better books out there, but this one has given us a good start.

If you are involved with a child that has been diagnosed as ADHD and/or ODD then you really should read this book. It provides you a very honest and fundamental understanding of how this child thinks and processes data. Armed with this understanding you will begin to understand why communications with this child have to be on a different level. The book is more clinical in nature than others I have read but will really help you help your defiant child. I suggest you also consider reading 'Have a New Kid by Friday' by Dr. Leman. This book is directed more with the physical side of dealing with a defiant child. It provides a clear understanding of how to deal and cope with many issues a defiant child represents. It also contains a section of questions and answers about the more common issues you will face when raising a defiant child. Education is one of the foundations you need to cope with this very difficult child.
