You've seen many of these entrances before, but perhaps withut knowing their architectural style, the period they represent, or their place in American history. You probably prefer some more than others, but perhaps without knowing exactly why. And you may have een tried visualizing some of the entrances on your own home... With 120 drawings by architect Paulo Vicente and accompanying text by home design expert Tom Connor, The Language of Doors identifies and discusses 350 years of architectural styles. I just reviewed a "door" book and had it mixed up with this one although the former review isn't totally inaccurate. This book has beautiful pictures and lots of information on all kinds of doors including the country and culture of origin. It's also a great history book. Well worth the purchase.

This small book (about 7 inches square) describes and illustrates American residential doors from the Colonial period to the 1940s. The descriptions are brief, but include information about what defines that particular style and what made the style popular at the time. Pencil sketches illustrate each style, with key features and details clearly labeled. In addition to providing a history of door styles, this book offers guidance for anyone who wishes to change the door on an existing home, with information about the styles of doors found on common residential styles in the U.S. (ranch, foursquare, Cape Cod, etc.). Altogether this is a nice little book with useful information and attractive pictures.

While building a house, I purchased this book to find design ideas for a Shingle Style front door. The book includes a chapter on Shingle Style, which was great. On pg 85, I found a door I loved and later had custom built for my home. It was a transitional style between Queen Ann and Shingle Style.

An interesting and educational read. Book easy to carry in beach bag or large handbag. Clear writing with good historic info. Loved that they gave places to see specific styles. Beautifully drawn renderings. Sure made me think more about improving any entrance I own or will own.

This book is a must read for anybody who is building or modifying a house. It shows in a very clear manner how doors reflect the character of the house. It is a well written technical book that on the subject that can also be easily undrstood by the average person.

Bought it for a friend who really liked it.

If you're an expert on Swift closures and all the inherent shortcuts involved with the syntax, you might be good to go. An added plus is if you're not looking for a book to teach, but rather to reinforce what you already know. I have no doubt that the writer of this book is intelligent, and is deft at implementing a functional architecture in Swift. I do doubt however, that he has any intention of helping those that are trying to teach themselves. This book is the author patting himself on the back. Nothing More.

Interesting collection of articles. In many ways it was a collection of tutorials. It pushed me to think more functionally in Swift, but I it wasn't an transformative work in the way the Gang of Four's Design Patterns or Pragmatic Thinking & Learning was for me. If you've never done functional programming this is not a book to learn it well. It'll give you an idea about what functional programming means, and gives you a different look at how Swift can be used, but it didn't do that great of a job teaching a functional programming to me, who's only really programmed in object-oriented languages. If you want to get into functional programming in swift. I suggest finding a better introduction to functional programming in any language and then use this to adopt that mindset it to Swift.Lastly, I felt I paid too much for it, but I was fine with that because objc.io was providing an amazing iOS resource for free. Now that they have shifted their focus to making money. I feel 30 USD would be a more appropriate cost for this book.

This is a good book if you know Swift and are also interested in learning Haskell-style functional programming specifically.

Excellent introduction to writing functional code in Swift

Yet another amazing book by the objc.io folks. This is *the* book to read after going through Apple's documentation. One word of caution, you want the version that is updated for Swift 2.x. The older version has a bird on the cover, the newer does not. I did receive the older version, but this was swiftly (no pun) resolved by the authors.

A must read for OO devs. Good job guys.

Somewhat hard to read. I think I spent a lot more time reading than I should have been. The authors are definitely intelligent, so maybe I missed something?

Every page makes my code 5% better than what it was before

My Bright Abyss: Meditation of a Modern Believer, by Christian Wiman

Review

“[Christian Wiman's] poetry and his scholarship have a purifying urgency that is rare in this world. This puts him at the very source of theology, and enables him to say new things in timeless language, so that the reader's surprise and assent are one and the same.” ―Marilynne Robinson, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Gilead“Every generation needs someone to write about faith as lucidly as Christian Wiman does in this ‘meditation of a modern believer.'” ―The Wall Street Journal“Christian Wiman's My Bright Abyss creates in the reader the keen, poetic attention of a man with a cancer diagnosis trying to remain fully present in his life. His spiritual ancestors are C. S. Lewis and Thomas Merton. Like Lewis, he's surprised by the joy of falling in love. Like Merton, he captures the smugness that can poison some atheists as it does some believers. This masterwork of doubt and faith, literature and theology, will affect nonbelievers and spiritual seekers alike.” ―Mary Karr, author of Lit and The Liar's Club“In another day and age, this book would be called a revelation, a mysticism, a holy text. What does it mean for a modern man to believe? In this extremely moving narrative, this question is asked with grace and fury, with astonishing eloquence and courage that only a few can equal in our time. It will be read for years and years to come.” ―Ilya Kaminsky, author of Dancing in Odessa“Forged from pain, like most masterpieces, My Bright Abyss provides an advanced course in applied mysticism for the twenty-first century.” ―Eliza Griswold, author of The Tenth Parallel“Christian Wiman has written a moving, thoughtful meditation on faith and poetry that is really a treatise on meaning: where we find it, what it offers us, whether it can mitigate pain. There's a luminous clarity in these pages, the kind that comes only when a writer is facing ultimate questions.” ―Meghan O'Rourke, author of The Long Goodbye“My Bright Abyss . . . has unlocked the universe for me. My soul sang alongside every word. It's an instant classic, will be revered a hundred years from now.” ―Jamie Quatro, The Fine Delight“Like the classic mystics, [Wiman] often resorts to a language of paradox to convey things that ordinary language can't … Wiman speaks carefully but powerfully . . . The best that can come from contemplation of mortality, perhaps, is a kind of wisdom that can give others strength--not by answering questions, like those best-sellers which claim to tell you what happens after you see the white light, but by asking questions honestly . . . My Bright Abyss is a book that will give light and strength, even to those who find themselves unable to follow its difficult path.” ―Adam Kirsch, The New Yorker“This is a daring and urgent book . . . More than any other contemporary book I know, My Bright Abyss reveals what it can mean to experience St. Benedict's admonition to keep death daily before your eyes . . . Wiman is relentless in his probing of how life feels when one is up against death . . . With both honesty and humility, Wiman looks deep into his doubts his suspicion of religious claims and his inadequacy at prayer. He seeks ‘a poetics of belief, a language capacious enough to include a mystery that, ultimately, defeats it, and sufficiently intimate and inclusive to serve not only as individual expression but as communal need. This is a very tall order, and Wiman is a brave writer to take it on . . . Wiman mounts a welcome, insightful and bracing assault on both the complacent pieties of many Christians and the thoughtless bigotry of intellectuals who regard Christian faith as suitable only for idiots or fools . . . This pithy and passionate book is not easy, but it is rewarding. Wiman's finely honed language can be vivid and engaging . . . He exhibits a poet's concern for precision . . . This is, above all, a book about experience, and about seeking a language that is adequate for both the fiery moments of inspiration and the ‘fireless life' in which we spend most of our days. It is a testament to the human ability to respond to grace, even at times of great suffering, and to resolve to live and love more fully even as death draws near.” ―Kathleen Norris, The New York Times Book Review“Burnished and beautiful, My Bright Abyss is a sobering look at faith and poetry by a man who believes fiercely in both, but fears he might be looking at them for the last time. Wiman's memoir is innovative in its willingness to interrogate not only religious belief, but one of its most common surrogates, literature . . . Wiman's story is chiefly a love affair: of a poet with words, of a husband with his wife and two daughters, of a believer with the holy . . . Here is a poet wrestling with words the way that Jacob wrestled the angel . . . Wiman calls his memoir the "Meditation of a Modern Believer," and it is that, but more than meditation, it is an apologia and a prayer, an invitation and a fellow traveler for any who suffer and all who believe.” ―Casey N. Cep, The New Republic“In verse and poetry alike, Christian Wiman possesses and endearing and profound spiritual sensibility . . . My Bright Abyss is built of prose so lyrical and true you want to roll it around in your mouth and then speak it to strangers on the street . . . Wiman refuses easeful conclusions, he celebrates the verse and the two-faced joy at the hub of our lives--Nietzsche's tragic joy--and in doing so he has written what will be for many a life-changing book.” ―William Giraldi, Virginia Quarterly Review“My Bright Abyss gives us eleven essays that are at once personal and philosophical, critical and inclusive. If it is possible to prolifically and empathetically investigate each existential imperative--death, art, love, and God--Wiman has offered us the closest thing . .. The essays are not unlike a poem in a collection, adding bone to the body, yet strong enough to stand alone. Each is immersed in conversation with the others, anchored to a common ambition: to restore the sacred extrapolation of our imaginations, the unfurling of faith and love in the moment of creating . . . Wiman writes with forceful honesty. His hope lays on the inchoate edge of impossibility and because of that becomes nearly tangible . . . The maturity of Wiman's voice, the quiet that suffuses his words and indicates his gravity of introspection, and the gorgeous cadence offered in damn near every sentence make this one book I'll relentlessly recommend to those peering into the terrifying and beautiful abyss--which is to say, anyone and everyone. We are indebted to him, a poet who revels in the limitations of language in My Bright Abyss and therefore, consequently and in a blaze, transcends those limitations.” ―Caitlin Mackenzie, HTMLGiant“In My Bright Abyss: Meditation of a Modern Believer . . . Christian Wiman--himself a fine poet and translator of the Russian poet and essayist Osip Mandelstam--contemplates the meaning of poetic incarnation in specifically Christian terms, drawing on a wide range of authors. He blends poetry (his own and others'), criticism, theological speculation, and memoir in ways that defy easy categorization . . . Throughout My Bright Abyss, Wiman avoids formulaic responses. His prose is poetry in the truest sense: language adequate to one person's experience . . . Wiman's book is a moving argument for the use of poetry as a spiritual guide . . . [Wiman] shows us what happens to a man when his relation to the divine is reawakened, his mind becoming alert in ways previously unimaginable. That alertness carries over into his readings of poetry, which occur in a pressured context, as the language of the poems becomes part of his evolving mental landscape, part of his recovery, his spiritual (as well as physical) survival . . . In My Bright Abyss, Wiman offers a demonstration of what faith means to a critic: not a new way of life but, more mysteriously, the old life freshly understood, filtered through a range of texts. He reminds us that revelation comes not in a whirlwind or fire, but in that ‘still, small voice' that came to Elijah in the desert. ‘The voice is always there, for everyone,' writes Wiman. ‘For some of us, unfortunately, it takes terror and pain to make us capable of hearing it.' It is this urgency that separates the wheat from the chaff among critics.” ―Jay Parini, The Chronicle Review“Wiman isn't the least bit sentimental or nostalgic about the deeply Christian faith that provides the bedrock for his meditation . . . I can think of only a handful of writers I've read who have diagnosed the contemporary spiritual condition as poignantly as Wiman. But he doesn't stop at ‘reading the times.' Wiman weaves an intensely personal account of the hard work of maintaining belief in the midst of a culture determined to identify itself as secular . . . The poet is always wide-eyed and available to the world, but Wiman has the kind of gaze that Flannery O'Connor says is peculiar to the Catholic writer: their seeing continues deep beneath the surface of what all of us can plainly see . . . [My Bright Abyss] is breathtakingly beautiful and astonishing in its wisdom. . . hands down, the best book I've read in more than a decade.” ―Kurt Armstrong, Geez Magazine“A set of sublimely original spiritual reflections . . . Beyond the autobiographical elements of the book, beyond the translucent prose that this gifted poet offers us, its more universal value is its presentation of a modern believer . . . This is a book to take in small bites, to savor and study. You cannot read it impatiently. It will challenge you, believer or not, to think again about the things that are most important. Above all, Wiman demonstrates how to be fully human and deeply religious in a way that is free of cant and fully open to sharing the pain of the world, perhaps in order to bring it to new life . . . Wiman speaks to today in ways that very few other spiritual writers have attained, causing his readers to become a little more alive, with all that might mean for a fuller insertion into the pain and the joy of the world.” ―Paul Lakeland, National Catholic Reporter“Wiman infuses his writing with lyricism and a playfulness with language . . . He augments his own mastery of language with the liberal use of quotations from other poets and writers, spanning an impressive range of literary backgrounds. Wiman's depth of knowledge as a reader truly undergirds this work, as he invokes everyone from George Herbert to Simone Weil, Dietrich Bonheoffer to Seamus Heaney. As the author struggles to understand God, he also struggles to comprehend the institution of Christianity, seeing in it deep flaws, an inability to fully grasp the depth of the God it proclaims, and what he sees as a childish clinging to legend and myth . . . Poignant and focused . . . Wiman's grasp of the written word carries this unconventional faith memoir.” ―Kirkus

"My Bright Abyss" is one of the most beautiful books I've ever read. Wiman's adroit use of words simultaneously fills me with envy and takes my breath away. The profound transparency of his thoughts will challenge you to stretch your heart and mind to new horizons. Speaking of his grandmother's change of dimensions, Wiman writes: ". . .that God looked her out of pain, that in the blink of an eye the world opened its tenderest interiors, and let her in." What a blessed way to view death. Over and over throughout this "meditation" the reader will experience thoughtful expressions, stirring the slumbering mind and calling the inner spirit to a like response. I loved this book so much that I bought four additional copies to give as gifts. For those of you who are looking for a thoughtful, mystical approach to belief, this is the book for you. If you merely enjoy beautiful prose with a smattering of poetry woven in, you will not be disappointed, either.

Much as Christ is characterized as being both human and something more, Christian Wiman's MY BRIGHT ABYSS is both a cancer memoir and something much more. It's a highly literate, highly erudite exploration of one man's re-connection to his faith during a period of physical agony. Wiman's language isn't just elevated, it burns through the sky in a revolving orbit that us earthbound stargazers can only wonder at.I don't read contemporary Christian nonfiction. Something tells me it's mostly designed for mass consumption: edible morsels salted with cant and mixed with easily parsed parables, where sin tempts Jane Doe, but Jane perseveres through her unerring faith. Wiman's work is challenging, which one would expect in a book about a thoughtful, serious man accepting Christianity. His theology is intensely personal and refreshingly benevolent: he never proselytizes, judges, or condemns. Most of the book is spent teasing out the answers to paradoxes of faith. Here, Wiman finds himself mired in opacity: embrace dogma, but not too much; believe in the parable of Jesus, except the parts you don't want to; don't focus on whether there's an afterlife, but prepare for something after death. If confronted with this criticism, Wiman would likely say that his inability to reconcile these issues is partly what inspires his faith. It's his leap. It's an unsolvable mystery of the soul, one that can only be partly revealed through faith.Unbelievers won't be converted by Wiman. He doesn't resolve any of the inherent problems with faith in the twenty-first century. But the book is worth reading in the same way that CS Lewis or Dorothy Sayers is worth reading for anyone who wants to seriously engage with one of life's most vexing issues. If for nothing else, the passage where Wiman addresses his children, whom he may never see grow up, is one of the most devastating, beautiful, and hopeful clumps of prose I have ever encountered. This is a good book, one that will make your brain burn calories, but it's also a book that ultimately fails to make a case for its author's philosophy.

This is a dense book and takes careful attention. There is so much in the words Wiman has chosen and like poetry is best read aloud. It sings. I found I was comfortable with his discomfort with easy answers and with his underlying certainty that God IS present even when we feel God's absense. I liked the way he talked around the edges of heaven and death and Christian Community. I long to know how this boy from West Texas came to W&L. Looking at the acknowledgments in the back before I read the book, I found many of my favorite poets. And we also have to be grateful for his editorship of Poetry Magazine ..... what alot Christian Wiman has given us. This is a great book. Even its size is perfect. Words carefully chosen. I shall read it over more than a few times. Thank you, Mr. Wiman. Now I have done a second reading of My Bright Abyss. I was on the porch swing on the back porch and didn't have a pencil (I didn't mark the book on first reading) and so I thought to turn down corners of pages that I might want to remember. The book is now miserably dogeared, I can't choose one easily to commend to the reader, but perhaps it might be the one in which Wiman speaks of the valuable female consciousness of the artist Lee Bontecou, Wiman's wife, his grandmother and he regrets Christianity's historical dismissal and undervaluing of the voices of women which are "more attuned to the immanent nature of divinity". I loved all his references to his grandmother. They were so truthful and so keen. But you have to read the book. On page 161 he movingly addresses his twin girls and assures them of his presence with them always in so many ways, no matter what. I loved that. Read the book.

A humbling tour de force. A lot of wisdom packed into this thin volume. But readers beware: it's not for the faint of heart or the faithless. And it's a good idea to have had a personal battle or two with the Christian faith somewhere in your background. Wiman is a master of the word, and he manages to draw together so much history, theology and literature into a single book, so as to have defined a prototype reference guide to Faith and the Human Condition. I'm grateful to know a fellow traveler like Wiman can even exist in our contemporary world of mindless, comfortably numb religiosity.... We need more Wiman in our diet, but only when he's ready to deliver. No need to rush a good thing, and compromise the message......thank you, sir.

There have been several excellent reviews that list the strengths of The Art of Fermentation. I can only add one thing - the author does an excellent job of citing his sources. I really appreciate that he does so - it allows me to go back and check for new, updated research and expand my reading. I particularly appreciate this in his section on fermentation and health. He adamantly does not claim fermented foods area a panacea and is skeptical of some of the touted benefits of various foods (kombucha as a cure for diabetes, for example). He argues, quite successfully, that fermented foods have their place in a well balanced, healthy, diet and provides the studies, traditions, and first-hand knowledge that demonstrates why.For those who are wondering which book would be the better choice, this book is not just an expanded version of Wild Fermentation. It's a different take on the subject that goes in depth in the process and concepts behind fermentation. Many different types of fermentation using different bases - grains, vegetables, fruit, etc - are explored. Be aware that this is not a cookbook or an introductory text, however. Traditional recipes are scarce. If you are looking for "add X tablespoon of salt to Y amount of cabbage" you will be disappointed. If you want to know about different fermentation methods used around the world so you can branch out in your own culinary experiments, this is the book for you.If you're an absolute novice, Wild Fermentation is probably the better starting place. It gives recipes and walks you through the steps more than The Art of Fermentation. Once you've made a few things and want to know more, the Art of Fermentation will really come into it's own!

First off: this book is beautiful. Hardcover, with a series of full-color plates 1/3rd and 2/3rds through. For only twice the price of a flimsy paperback, you're investing in five hundred solidly-constructed pages that will last. And a good thing, because this book is destined to be a classic. You don't need to have read Katz' other work, Wild Fermentation: The Flavor, Nutrition, and Craft of Live-Culture Foods, to understand, appreciate, and use this book - it stands alone. If you already own Wild Fermentation, don't be put off by the duplication of some recipes in the Table of Contents. Yes, sauerkraut, kimchi, and pickles are in here, but every section is greatly expanded with much more information and many more references. (Ever thought of using a layer of cooking oil as an airlock? Neither had I, but I'm going to try it!)Speaking of references... the Resources, Glossary, and Works Cited chapters could keep you busy for a few years. And yes: you will use this book. As Michael Pollan states in the well-written foreword, this is not one of those cookbooks you buy for the nice pictures and keep on your coffee table. This is a project manual. Fermentation is something you have to experience to understand, and Katz give you absolutely everything you need to get started. The first 67 pages are devoted entirely to the beginner, focusing not on specific recipes but on answering the inevitable questions: "WHY would I want to ferment food? is it safe? what equipment and general expertise do I need?"Again from Pollan: "Katz writes about the transformative power of fermentation with such infectious enthusiasm that he makes you want to try things just to see what happens." This is so true. Even if you don't initially intend to, many of these 'recipes' are so simple and unintimidating (hard apple cider, mead, sauerkraut and its derivatives, sourdough) that it's hard to resist the urge to pick up a box of Mason jars and some fresh produce the next time you're at the grocery store. Many of us are experimenters at heart, and fermentation is the perfect mix of art and science to tap into this nature and inspire all kinds of crazy projects.Already the neighborhood King of Kraut? I guarantee that this book will still have something for you. Chapter 12 - "Fermenting Meat, Fish, and Eggs" isn't enough? Turn to Chapter 13, for a short but serious discussion of what it takes to turn a fermentation hobby into a small business. Notes about scaleup, HACCP plans, and licensing are cool to read about, though I have no plans to open a tempeh factory anytime soon. Or how about Chapter 14 - "Non-Food Applications of Fermentation"? Again, I don't live on a farm, but it is neat to read about compost, silage, and bioremediation. (Surprise: Katz doesn't buy into corn ethanol biofuels)While this is by no means a biology textbook, the scientific content is much improved over Wild Fermentation. Chapter 1 - "Fermentation as a Coevolutionary Force" is, in general, accurate and well-referenced. Katz is not a formally-trained scientist, but he does not shy away from technical details when they are helpful for understanding, and he shows respect for the scientific method and its results. See, for instance, his discussion of 'homofermentative' and 'heterofermentative' organisms in vegetable fermentation (pg 96), or of commercial starter cultures (pg 132).If you subsist on white bread and margarine and bleach your cutting boards after every use, fermentation may not be the hobby for you. The first time I skimmed some strangely-textured yeast off of a crock of fermenting beets, I have to admit I was a little skeptical what those beets would look like when I pulled them out (they were absolutely delicious). While some of my more imaginative fermentation adventures have yielded delicious results, a few have been downright terrible (yep, ate them anyway!). If you don't see any issue with carving a bit of mold off some cheese or a piece of fruit instead of throwing it out, then you probably have what it takes. Many (most?) of the poor reviews on Wild Fermentation are from people taking issue with Katz' lifestyle or philosophies. Many of his philosophical discussions in this book are backed up with hard science and references, so even those who found Wild Fermentation to be overbearing may find this new book to be more palatable. If you have some problem with the fact that Katz has HIV (he states this outright in the new book, and includes a sidebar about how fermented foods may be helpful but they are not a disease cure), do the rest of us a favor and keep it to yourself.I've been experimenting with fermentation for about a year, relying mostly on Wild Fermentation and a substantial collection of online resources. I've only had this book for a week, and I've already had tons of fun and learned a lot. When I'm finished with my read-through, this book will definitely be making its rounds among my friends. A great reference and a worthwhile investment - highly recommended.

Fermentation was frankly something I had little to no experience or interest in until a few years ago....even then it was a slow progression. For health reasons (we're not getting any younger) we started taking an active interest in food - both the quality of the food and the preparation practices. The more we learned, the more we started cooking, baking and making our own food.Bread was perhaps one of the very first things we took the time to make from scratch and soon the bread baking became a weekly tradition. Fresh baked bread is so delicious, warm and comforting. Of course, that led to grinding our own flour and since bread is so much like beer - my spouse began experimenting with home brewed beer and wine and even soda. It wasn't long before something always seemed to be brewing in the kitchen and at least one of us, was quickly becoming a fermentation fan.Over those few years, our diet, shopping habits, food choices and preparation methods changed fairly radically from what we had thought was a decent diet to an all organic, homemade diet with local produce when possible. It was during that time I started hearing more and more about the benefits of fermentation of other foods - but frankly, not having grown up around anything remotely related to food preparation, I had no idea what was/wasn't fermented. In fact, I thought pickles were always made with vinegar and canned - I had no idea they were fermented. Ditto for sauerkrout or oodles of other items. Somewhere along the line, I came across Sandor's first book on fermentation and purchased it. It was NOT love at first sight...in fact, after the first read, I thought it sounded horrible (rotted food?!) and set it aside for at least another year. Then by chance, I happened to taste some REAL pickles..then fermented salsa and several other things that just knocked my socks off. I pulled that book out and decided to give it a try. Low and behold, it worked like a charm!Soon I was buying big fermentation pots and since then we have become regular consumers of fermented products made a home. I then bought the book and video set and several other books on fermentation...in fact, by this point, I probably own most of the major books about fermentation. So, when this came up as an advanced order option, I purchased it right away although I wasn't sure what to expect. It was delivered early and right from the start, it is obvious this book is MUCH larger than previous books. It provides a exemplary overview of fermentation from both a historical perspective as well as current uses around the globe. The information expands upon the understanding of fermentation in a dramatic way. It's both interesting and informative. Without a doubt, it's one of the best books I've read on the subject and I've read a LOT of them! Now, if you are just wanting an introduction to fermentation with a few quick and easy recipes' and examples, the older books by Katz are probably still your best choice. On the other hand, if you are a person that likes to understand a topic in depth when starting something new, this may be more to your liking.Existing fermentation fans will ABSOLUTELY want to purchase this new book for the expanded knowledge, information and insight. It will not disappoint!May your beer always bubble, your bread always rise -Your pickles always pucker and your crock never demise!Happy fermenting folks!

I always enjoy Bernie's books. This is the 2nd one of these I bought since my first got something spilled on it and it was ruined. I like looking at Bernie's plans because of their prototype inspiration as well as how he puts together those elements into an operations oriented model railroad.

Has some great ideas

Disappointed w/ this book, for it doesn't break any new grounds, nor offer any useful track planning ideas - at least for me. Some of the track plan themes are actually quite silly, and I don't expect that they would ever get built by anyone who's a serious model railroader. Not one of Kalmbach's better efforts by a long shot. Save your money and look elsewhere.

This review is based on what I was hoping for versus what model railroaders may be looking for. To me, there has been a dire shortage of layout designs that feature continuous run planning with some thoughtful scenery potential. Probably the most successful book in this genre was the original "101 Track Plans" by Linn Westcott. However, in Mr. Kempinski's compilation of layout plans, it seemed way too many plans in the beginning were devoted to diorama concepts rather than running trains. (I'm sorry... a straight track with two stub tangents is not a layout. It's a display piece) There is also an abundance of point-to-point industrial switching plans. Whereas I can see modelers enjoying creating a well-executed "snapsho" layoutst in scaled 3D or immersing themselves in "real railroad" practices, it's just not my thing. I must be in the minority as publications seem to target "serious" realistic modelers, not someone who enjoys a well-executed layout that if you wanted to step back and watch the trains run, you can. I just wish there were more designers approaching layout planning with this old school sensibility utilizing what to me is manageable size (one car garage ) and, as already stated, continuous running with some interesting car storage and switching ability. The publication quality of "45 Original Track Plans" is fine and, as others have stated, well-written. I just wish I could find plan books that suit my needs. better.

A good book to get ideas from for a new layout of adding to an existing one, which I'm doing. You can use it for any scale to get ideas from.

Whether you need inspiration for a small layout or a building filling layout, this book will definitely whet your appetite!

Kinda dull. Something about the computer assisted renderings takes a lot away from the track plans. Maybe I've just been spoiled by fifty years of the previous track plans from Model Railroader.
