An interesting book about the town of Venice and the people who actually live there- as opposed to the tourists. The people and places you meet in the book are interesting, but he just couldn't find the quirkiness and the mystery that he found in Savannah. Sorry, John. "Midnight" is one of my favorite books- next time, try New Orleans.

I read this book when it first came out, and I remember it as being one of the best books I ever read. It married a mystery with quirky characters, with history - all of the components that made "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" truly great. I recently bought the book and read it again, with hopes of recommending it to my book group. But alas, I remember it better than it was. I would recommend this book - but not for a book group. There really wasn't enough there for discussion. I personally got a lot out of it, because I read it right before taking a trip to Venice. It formulated my travel plans in the city. Some high points of my trip were going to a concert at La Fenice Opera House, and viewing the church that gave the book its title.

What a great book. The author relates everything that is great and not so great about Venice. Its history, its greats, its eccentrics, its social history, what Venice was, is and what it hopes to be. A fantastic book. A pleasure to read.

It's inevitable that readers of Midnight will have high expectations for Berendt's latest, and I, too, wanted to be charmed when I began Angels. Berendt failed to fire my interest in the first chapters, but I continued on and after plowing ahead found myself fully engrossed. I was rewarded for my perseverence.Berendt has managed to write vignettes that fall together in a theme of decadance amid beauty. Angels falling, indeed. An arrogant people resting on very old laurels, the world's most beautiful city requiring a league of wealthy New Yorkers for its preservation, and no particular thrust by its citizenry to rise up from the muck into which it's been sinking for centuries.There are juicy scandals. bits of glamor and frivolity, and sad glimpses of a city that is falling apart in more ways than the physical. The place is a fascinating mess. That's Venice: an agonizingly proud and crippled city held up only by its glorious past which remains in full evidence to its many visitors.Berendt makes a textual thread of the tale of the fire at the Fenice Theatre and the legal machinations to find blame, but it's more a book of short works that would stand alone. As such, it sits well with everyone's favorite works about Venice.

The book never seemed to take off or really finish. I would not recommend this book to a friend to read.

I find Berendt's style of writing engaging and his story telling an enjoyable way to explore history from a unique perspective. His access to people who had a front seat to noteworthy events gives a front row seat as mysteries unfold. I'm getting ready for a trip to Venice and this book added to my excitement. Only wish I could meet some of the people he had access to.

For anyone interested in a snapshot of Venetian elite living, although not quite. Venice seen by an American writer who was able yo cominglel with expatriates as well as a select number of Venetian upper crust. Very well done vignettes on Venetian history as promptef by the fire of the opera house. I found it good and absorbing reading but I am a historian .

I bought this book in the mistaken belief that it was a novel. In fact, it is a work of non-fiction, but its rich cast of characters might provide enough material for several novels; they leap off the page in all their obsessions, follies, and foibles with an intensity that seems to belong more to fiction than to sober fact. But then Venice, which is the setting of John Berendt's book, has always seemed a place of fantasy; perhaps that is why it has attracted so many expatriate artists over the centuries (Robert Browning, JMW Turner, Henry James, Richard Wagner, Claude Monet, Igor Stravinsky, and Ezra Pound, to name but a few), besides producing such great art of its own.Berendt arrives in Venice in January 1996, a day or two after the city's famous opera house, La Fenice (the phoenix, aptly named), had been completely gutted by fire. He decides to stay in the city for a long time, and the story of the investigation of the fire, raising the money for the theater's reconstruction, selecting between competing plans and bids, and the Byzantine process of gaining approvals and managing the rebuilding forms the major connecting thread of the book, ending with the theater's reopening in 2003. But there are other stories as well, often with strong novelistic overtones. One in particular -- an account of shady dealings in the disposal of a large cache of documents left by Ezra Pound -- Berendt sees as a virtual replay of the plot of Henry James' novella, THE ASPERN PAPERS, in the same Venetian setting.Berendt shares a nineteenth-century novelist's fascination with internecine feuds. There are two main ones in the book. The first details a split between the sons of the last great master of Venetian glass-making, Archimede Seguso, whose final works were created out of a personal response to the Fenice fire, which he watched from his apartment. Berendt has a way of making one brother seem an angel and the other the villain -- until he interviews the other, allowing the reader to see the situation from the opposite perspective and to make up his own mind. He uses the same technique in describing the feud between the Americans Larry Lovett and Bob Guthrie, the successive presidents of the Save Venice foundation. Here the dealings get a lot more unpleasant and leave a nasty taste in the mouth even after the book is finished. I think this is partly because these people occupy a social stratum far above that of most readers; I find myself asking of these and several other characters in the book: "How can you use your privileged position to behave like THAT?"For there is one quality that I do not like in this excellently-structured and well-written book: Berendt writes from the perspective of a superior gossip columnist and social snob. The whole book has an implied put-down of tourists and ordinary visitors. Berendt claims to write about the real Venetians, the people who live there the whole year round. But a high proportion of his characters are the movers and shakers, the Venetian contesse and marchesi, foreign royalty, captains of industry, millionaire expatriates, film stars, and a few powerful members of the city administration. Even his historians and connoisseurs have to be world experts. There seems to be little room for ordinary travelers and art-lovers who approach this special city with respect and wonder. Berendt takes delight in visiting the rich and famous in their palaces that others cannot penetrate, but the effect on this reader at least is one of exclusion, not access. Having spent many weeks in Venice as a student of art history, then a musician, and then on my honeymoon, I feel a sympathy with the place; but instead of extending my admittedly partial understanding, this book makes me feel that I do not belong there at all.My title, opera buffa, is also the title of one of Berendt's chapters; there is indeed a comic-opera quality through the entire book, the extended spirit of the Venetian Carnival, though I think less of opera than the crazy excess of a Fellini movie. But there is a softer side to the comic vision, verging on pathos, which Berendt handles especially well in his brief portraits of Venetian loners. Early on in the book, we meet Capitano Mario, an eccentric who dresses in a different uniform every day to perform perfectly useless tasks of splendid busy-ness. Then there is the Rat Man of Treviso, an industrialist who has made a fortune selling country-specific rat poison which tastes of typical leftovers from human food, only better. And a very moving chapter near the end tells of the apparent death by suicide of a well-known gay poet, who wanted to be known as "the man who loved others" but who had nobody truly to love him. Here, as the human comedy shifts into tragedy, Berendt touches a note that validates the underlying seriousness of his book, despite the baroque excesses of its upper crust.

Doctor Morrison's clinician's guide to the DSM IV was the single best book available and was a superb aide to those of us preparing for a licensing exam. The title, "made easy", might cause some to dismiss it but it lives up to that claim in a way that is insightful, analytically sound, and authoritative. Morrison also presented the material in a format that made sense and actually made the subject entertaining to someone with a serious interest in it. His guide to the DSM - 5 is equally well done and effective in discussing the new DSM intelligently and expertly. Changes in the various diagnoses are highlighted and some of the reasoning behind those changes are discussed but not the primary focus. Once again, he makes it all "easy" by actually making it clear and organizing it simply. There is no doubt Morrison is an expert diagnostician but there is no "talking down" or lecturing. His style invites the reader, whether beginning or experienced clinician, to explore the DSM with him as a guide. He writes superbly and anyone who has benefited from his work on the DSM IV will not hesitate to invest in this essential book. I have turned to his first text many, many times over the years and expect that will be the case as I integrate the DSM - 5 into my practice and find myself struggling with a particular diagnosis. It's a reliable resource and can often prove to be an invaluable reference to have at hand.

If like me you have to read the entire DSM-5 manual, do yourself a favor and buy this as the main read and use the DSM-5 as a complimentary reference, you won't regret it. The writing is engaging (unlike the dry DSM-5), succinct, with real life examples which give a sense to the material ... This was a "recommended" reading in my pcychopathology class ... I'm so glad I followed the "recommendation" ... I like his reading style so much, and I find it so helpful that I am buying one of his other books "Diagnosis made easier" ....This should definitely help me this semester.

Great book to clarify the criterias in the DSM 5. The vignettes for each diagnosis really pulled it all together.

The most helpful part of this book was the case studies for every single disorder. Other than that, it really doesn't offer any information that the DSM doesn't. But if case studies help you, totally worth the buy.

At times, when I'm doing an assessment, being that I don't know everything, I prefer to use this book rather than the DSM-5 itself. It has rationale as to why what you thought may have been incorrect as well as expounding on the nuance's of the DSM-5.

A wonderful companion book for the APA's almost unreadable DSM-5. Morrison does a great job of distilling what is really important about each psychiatric diagnosis, while giving you the "why" behind some of the APA's often mysterious thought processes.

I wouldn't recommend it for examination preparation. The author cites criteria that the DSM 5 does not use. For example, for "Borderline Intellectual Functioning", it says IQ range of 71-84, but the DSM 5 does not use IQ as criteria for diagnosis.

So initially this bok looked to be in great condition, the spine was intact, the dust jacket wasn't torn, then I started reading. One page seems to have been misprinted and the page was folded over so I am missing some text. And at the back of the book, a chunk of pages are upside down and out of order. I am very disappointed.

In bleak rural Manitoba, Nomi longs for her older sister, Tash ("she was so earmarked for damnation it wasn't even funny"), and mother, Trudie, each of whom has recently fled fundamentalist Christianity and their town. Her gentle, uncommunicative father, Ray, isn't much of a sounding board as Nomi plunges into bittersweet memory and grapples with teenage life in a "kind of a cult with pretend connections to some normal earthly conventions." Once a "curious, hopeful child" Nomi now relies on biting humor as her life spins out of control—she stops attending school, shaves her head and wanders around in a marijuana-induced haze—while Ray sells off most of their furniture, escapes on all-night drives and increasingly withdraws into himself. Still, she and Ray are linked in a tender, if fragile, partnership as each slips into despair. Though the narration occasionally unravels into distracting stream of consciousness, the unsentimental prose and the poignant character interactions sustain reader interest. Bold, tender and intelligent, this is a clear-eyed exploration of belief and belonging, and the irresistible urge to escape both. That leaves the 16-year-old to look after her gentle, bewildered father and to deal with her own loneliness and persistent memories of how her family came undone. For Nomi, coping becomes an exercise in increasingly rebellious, sometimes self-destructive behavior, punctuated by pot-fuelled fantasies of escaping to New York to become a roadie for Lou Reed. I was unaware of this author until I went on a cruise to the Caribbean in December of 2017. On the ship, I met Elvira, a lovely woman from Canada , who happened to be a Mennonite. We engaged in a discussion on books, and she told me that her daughter was an author. I requested her daughter's name and did a search on Amazon. I was intrigued by a number of her books and ordered them. This was one of them. I was not disappointed.This is a quirky, well-written book. The story centers around Naomi Nickel, a Mennonite teenager living in a somewhat desolate town founded by Mennonites in Manitoba, Canada. Her mother and sister have left the family and she lives with somewhat odd father. Odd is the operative word, since both she and her father seem to be at odds with the insular fundamentalist community in which they live. This is their world as seen through Naomi's eyes. It is also her journey to discovery, a strangely compelling one.I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the author's other novels.

I've become a big fan of Ms. Toews. Her stories are sad, compelling, moving, and funny.Built pretty unabashedly on the author's own life, though still fiction, they evocatively depict life in a rural Mennonite community in Canada, from the perspective of, in the case of A Complicated Kindness, a conflicted, troubled adolescent girl raised in a non-conforming family. Her characters are vivid, quirky, and interesting. One of the most intriguing aspects of Toews's writing is how she incorporates dialog. She doesn't use quotation marks. That's not all that unusual - a lot of writers do that. But with her, several exchanges between characters can occur in a single paragraph, and intermix with the protagonist's inner thoughts. That may sound like it should be confusing, but I never, ever got confused. It made perfect sense throughout. It felt to me like I was listening to a story told by a camp fire. It flows wonderfully.The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is because I don't think it's quite as good as All My Puny Sorrows, so I had to give it less than a perfect score. Call it a four-and-a-half.

This is a well-written book, but it is horribly depressing. There is in theory nothing wrong with a depressing book, but it was so sad I actually resented it. Some of the other reviewers seem to see Nomi Nickel as a "cute" little teen growing up, sort of a MennoniteGidget. In fact she is a severely depressed girl who loses her mother and older sister, and whose father and best friend are kind, but clearly psychotic. In reaction to the ultra-conservatism of her sad town, she goes to the opposite extreme, and drinks, drugs, and has sex too early. The end is very well-written, but we don't know what happens to Nomi. We don't know if she leaves her town,or sits alone and spends her whole life dreaming in her head. One issue the book raises is: Do we see Nomi and her family as psychologically Disturbed, or do we see their behavior as coming from the small community they live in? Interesting, but I am still worried Nomi is alone in her house, still daydreaming.

I read this book first when I was about fifteen. I heard snippets of it on a CBC radio broadcast, and it really got under my skin. The book has shaped a lot of my perspectives and really resounded with me because I empathized with the main character's experiences in growing up in a small town.With that out of the way, the sense of humour, the unique writing style, and the imagery are all really strong here. The author is sympathetic even to antagonistic characters, and it's great. Everyone is held responsible for their actions, too.I do think some readers will dislike the ending, and that prose style does take getting used to as well.All in all, it's a wonderful book by a really good author, and I have to recommend it for all ages--particularly people who think YA is all fluffy romance and post-apocalyptic adventure.

"A Complicated Kindness" is a work of extreme adolescent alienation and unalloyed angst. No mere coming-of-age novel, its subject matter, a young woman's frustrated rage against the suffocating strictures of a small religious sect in an isolated rural Canadian community, is bound to upset its readers. Its author, Miriam Toews, has created a disenchanted, bewildered and embittered protagonist whose rebellion against her tightly-controlled environment rarely produces positive results. In fact, Nomi Nickel receives no solace, spiritual guidance or moral direction from her sequestered Mennonite community. The ironically named East Village is, to Nomi, death-in-life -- everywhere from its major industry, a slaughterhouse for chickens to its otherworldly preoccupation with damnation and the afterlife.Against this repressive milieu, Nomi's mother and sister have fled precipitously, leaving her to fend for herself with her overmatched father. Her oldest sister, Tash, wantonly flouts convention, brazenly embracing a life-sytle that literally predetermines her excommunication from the church and town. More intriguing is the torment her mother, Trudie, experiences. Divided in loyalty between husband, family and faith, Trudie elects an understated subversion of Mennonite tyranny. Her inability to make decisions, her unspoken support of Tash's revolt and her agonizing ultimate decision to flee make her the quiet, invisible embodiment of discontent.In the wake of their departure, Nomi and her befuddled father Ray make do poorly. The disappearance of the home's furniture eerily mirrors the absence of Trudie and Tash. Ray, a devoted sixth-grade teacher, adheres to the structure of Mennonite behaviors, even including wearing a coat and tie to a demolition derby which he attends with Nomi. His heart, torn asunder from conflicted loyalties and the tormented love he has for both his wife and his faith, cannot expand sufficiently to take care of his remaining daughter. Consequently, Nomi's life spirals inexorably out of control. Cigarettes, drugs and rock music cannot staunch her emotional bleeding. Limited by an understandable poor self-image and resisting social pressures for too enormous to battle alone, Nomi flounders. Even halfhearted attempts at sexual expression fail in bittersweet hopelessness.Toews does not turn "A Complicated Kindness" into a sour polemic. Her novel crackles with humor; there simply isn't a page where Nomi's mordant sensibilities don't elicit laughter. Toews' tart observations about East Village compete with Nomi's descriptions of the malignant characters circulating through her life. Her uncle, the major domo of the church, is called The Mouth; his wife, Aunt Gonad. Nomi's friends are a rogue's gallery of teen-aged desperation -- from The Comb, East Village's accommodating pusher; Lydia, her emotionally devastated friend, hospitalized for depression; her feckless boyfriend Travis, whose callow cowardice belies his grandiose dreams.Even though "A Complicated Kindness" is a dazzling success, it does have some inexplicable flaws. Nomi's character wanders from genuine adolescent authenticity to an unbelievable omniscient figure; the character often says things that Nobel laureates would be proud to utter. On numerous occasions, characters become caricatures, sapping the novel's gritty realism for cheap laughs and satirical overkill. Questions posed by the relationship between Ray and Trudie deserve better consideration than the pat answers "A Complicated Kindness" provides. It comes as no shock to the reader that there are several surprise twists at the novel's conclusion.That being said, "A Complicated Kindness" is an extremely important book. Its honesty, insights and sensitivities reveal its author's enormous talents. In Nomi Nickel, Miriam Toews has created an adolescent anti-hero for the late twentieth century, one who could easily hold her own with Holden Caulfield.

This book is wonderful. It is really helping me plan my trip and lots of great color pics!

This is a great reference that explains all the little details you would need to know to decide where to go and what to do. I ordered it for my next trip and was so p,eased I ordered a second one for my niece to entice her to visit.

Excellent guide to this area. Great history lesson in the first chapter which gives me a greater understanding and appreciation.

A good example of why certain genres of journalism, esp. travel writing, are dinosaurs in the online era. Would have been more informative to separate San Juan from the islands.

We just returned from a week sailing in the Spanish Virgin Islands (Puerto Rico), and we found this guide to be accurate and up to date. It made us aware of several places and historical sites that we would have overlooked along the way. Would definitely recommend.

Nice book written from the perspective and experience of someone who has been to Puerto Rico several times. I liked the insider look at everything from food to hotels to tours. Great!

We spent a week in San Juan & on Vieques Island prior to a week long southern Caribbean cruise, this guide was extremely helpful.
