This is an amazing book to use. I married into a Russian speaking family and wanted to learn the language to communicate better with my in-laws and my wife's grandparents. Not knowing a single word of Russian this was the perfect book to start with as it has the words written out in Russian and spells out the correct pronunciation in English for you. It also has pictures next to each word to let you know what you are saying/talking about.This will not teach you the entire language but an excellent starter book for all beginners
This book provides good, basic household / life words with transliterations, albeit no audio CD. If you know Russian or have studied it, you should do fine. If you don't, the transliterations should help.The paperback version of this book is pretty thin, and this book can be damaged by young children. The binding I think is via glue. At this juncture, I do not know how the binding will hold up; but it's such a thin book that you might be able to remove the pages carefully and put them in a binder, if you prefer.
I bought a quick study guide (ISBN-10: 1572226986) which has the alphabet listed with the pronunciation of each letter next to it, and that has made this book easier to use and more helpful. Knowing the alphabet makes this book an excellent starting point for learning some basic words. Pictures in the book are labeled with the English word and the Russian word just below that, and with the pronuinciation below that. The colored pictures are clear and unmistakable.This book doesn't suggest labeling everyday items in your home with Russian words. I believe that would help as well.
I bought this book to teach my three year old some Foreign vocabulary words. The book has lots of colorful photos, all clearly labeled with English words and a phonetic pronunciation. The phonetic pronunciations are all pretty accurate, but there are some that are slightly off, but not enough to worry that you (or your child) is mispronouncing the word and saying something a native speaker would find embarrassing. If you have never studied the language of the book you are buying, be sure you are familiar with phonetic pronunciations like those you would find in a dictionary, or you might be frustrated trying to figure out exactly how to say the word.I bought the Russian, German, and Italian versions of this book, which is nice, because they all contain the same basic pictures and vocabulary. All are some of my three year old's favorite books.

It is very cute, and I like that the way to pronounce the word in Russian is coupled with what the word means in English. Very good teaching tool.
