If you love knowing about proper grammar and sentence construction, and are an attorney, then this book is essential. Instead of relying on generic English grammar reference books from your undergrad days you should literally throw all those away now, and use this. This is by an attorney, for attorneys, where all the examples are related to legal matters (contract clauses, statues, legal cites, etc.).I cannot go two pages without gasping at something that I didn't know.Aside from the useful and relevant subject matter, the quality of the explanations themselves are so concise. Being an aspiring grammar Nazi I have always been disappointed in the narrow examples that typical English grammar books provide. Even beyond the usefulness of the legal-centric focus, I've learned more reading this book than any previous generic English grammar book owing to the author's razor-sharp intellect.

THE REDBOOK is an excellent resource for beginning students of legal style. It's a concise manual for the multivariate points of English grammar, vocabulary, and document presentation. It covers nearly every major grammatical rule in concise form, loaded with tight and concise examples; discusses commonly misunderstood words and their usage (ala Mr. Garner's MODERN LEGAL USAGE); and provides a concise presentation of legal document type, purpose, and presentation. Overall--well done.Unfortunately, no work is without its flaws. This text has a few typographical errors. For instance, one instructional note indicates that articles contained in periodicals should not be italicized, however the example provided is italicized! Additionally, one example which was supposed to contain the word "not" was incorrectly typed as "note." Though these are not major errors, they undercut the author's lexicographic philosophy of clarity, due care, and empathy for the reader; such errors force the reader to invariably double-take--and in a grammar style book! Even so, these errors are not the norm in this work.I greatly enjoy studying this text and I would encourage any one to purchase it if they are either 1) beginning legal style training or 2) learning English grammar in a legal-business professional environment.May God bless you in your diligent studies of the written and spoken English word!

I purchased this book after hearing several faculty members at my law school sing its praises, and reading rave reviews here on Amazon. When the book came, I was disappointed.There's absolutely nothing wrong with the book. It's a good book. It has a lot of great information. But, if you write well already, if you had a good legal writing course, or if your written material scored well in moot court, this book is just going to collect dust on your shelf. I know plenty of lawyers who could really benefit from an afternoon with this book, but I know plenty of lawyers who could have written it, too. If you feel your legal writing could use some work, by all means, purchase this book; if you're confident in your legal writing, and you're just looking for that little boost, you probably won't find it here.By way of explanation, here are chapters in this book:1) Punctuation. This chapter covers the use of common punctuation marks, such as commas, semicolons, and quotation marks, as well as lesser-used marks like the em dash, slashes, and bullets.2) Capitalization. 'Nuff said.3) Italics, Boldface, and Underlining.4) Document Design. Arguably one of the more valuable chapters in this book; it covers the use of white space, margins, headers, headings, etc. Things that get very little attention unless they begin to interfere with the flow of the document.5) Numbers.6) Typographic Symbols. E.g., the section symbol, the paragraph symbol, the degree symbol, etc.7) Spelling. While I sincerely believe that spelling is becoming a lost art that desperately needs revival, I'm not sure that a book (at least, any book other than the dictionary) is the appropriate avenue for doing so.8) Citation. Or, you know, just spin through that other book named after a primary color.9) Footnotes.10) Grammar. Grammar _has_ taken a back seat in modern-day primary and secondary school curriculum, but again, I'm not sure that this book is the best way to fix that problem.11) Stuffy Words and Legalese. If you didn't learn this stuff in your legal writing class, you need to learn it somewhere, so I guess I can't complain about it being here.12) Troublesome Words. No joke, this book has a chapter on homonyms, idioms, etc. This also makes a passable attempt at replacing your legal dictionary, but I wouldn't toss ol' Black just yet.13) Editing and Proofreading. This chapter is better than it sounds, but the important takeaway from this chapter is just to ask yourself what you're trying to say, and why you're saying it in any particular manner.14) Research Memos. Now we're getting to the good stuff. From here on out, it gives two model documents for each of the chapters. Depending on your legal writing class, this stuff can be invaluable, or can be a complete review.15) Opinion Letters.16) Demand Letters.17) Pleadings. Be sure to be aware that your jurisdiction or judge might require a different format than what's in this book.18) Motions.19) Appellate Briefs. I've gotta say, I hope you're not entering appellate practice with just this book to guide you, but if you are, it's definitely better than nothing.20) Contracts. Ignore the examples, focus on the tips for formatting and style. Write your own contract and tailor it to your practice area.

Very nicely written. The author left out a lot, but had she included everything the book would have been over 1000 pages. I would have read it in one night, but ran out of time after the first 180 pages and had to finish in the morning. We did not just make national news during this, but international news as well. Pretty fierce for an area that our state government doesn't even realize is part of Virginia! Most of us got little to no sleep for the entire 5 months, worrying where the next fire would be.

This is a stunning book. I read it (rather, I swallowed it) in three marathon sittings. The story is captivating, unfolding a troubling and urgent mystery in a once-proud region now become a backwater. It's a page-turner. But the keen insights about this county and its people, coupled with an engaging style, are what push this book into the territory of the extraordinary. I especially appreciated Hesse's ability to balance clear affection for the county's residents with honest critique. Both beauty marks and blemishes. Read it first for a compelling story. Read it a second time to appreciate this fine portrait of a lost America.

“The county would grow used to hearing the wail of sirens in the middle of the night, the sound of engines and tankers crunching over gravel. The county would see landmarks go up in flames and neighbors eye one another with suspicion at the grocery store. At night, the roads would transform into a sea of checkpoints and cop cars; citizens trying to get home while Accomack turned into a police state and the county lit up around them. The county went about its business. The county burned down.” --page 11It was a nightmare that lasted for nearly five months. Between November 2012 and April 1, 2013, a total of 86 fires had been deliberately set in remote Accomack County on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. For the most part, the fires were being set in long abandoned buildings located in extremely desolate areas. It has been estimated that were literally thousands of such buildings dotting the landscape in Accomack County, a sign of declining economic fortunes over the past several decades. Despite the best efforts of state and local police and fire officials very little progress had been made in determining who was setting these fires. It was an extremely frustrating, costly, and baffling situation. Monica Hesse is a feature writer for the Washington Post. I simply could not put this book down and read it in just a few sittings. This is easily the best book I have read this year.If you are like me you have probably never even heard of Accomack County. According to Hesse, the heyday of this place was in the 1930’s when a resort complex called Whispering Pines was built. It was the site of one of the fires in March of 2013. In those days Accomack boasted a vigorous farming community as well. But over the next several decades market conditions changed, people moved away, and the place began to deteriorate. In “American Fire” you will meet the two individuals deemed responsible for all of these fires. Charlie Smith and Tonya Bundick had very checkered pasts and were involved in what turned out to be a very complicated relationship. Meanwhile, you will also be introduced to the team of state and local officials charged with putting an end to this reign of terror. You will discover many of the tactics they employed to finally trip up the arsonists and put them behind bars.The story told in “American Fire, Love, Arson, and Life in a Vanishing Land” becomes even more incredible when you realize that volunteers fought the fires in all of these tiny communities. Night after night for nearly five months these heroic men and women would have to drag themselves out of a warm bed to battle the next blaze. Simply amazing! So if you are looking for a great book to take along with you on your summer vacation this year I would highly recommend “American Fire”. It reads like a novel but this is a true story. Trust me, you will not be disappointed.

Exceptional perceptions of the decay of morality in rural America. Written with enough, just enough, empathy that the communal fear becomes the tension. We know who soon enough and there is a fair bit of courtroom drama witnessed and reported on. Nothing tedious, just burnishes the characters. Not so much a page-turning thriller, though there is an element of that, as a provocative peeling of layers of a relationship. Much is left unknown, particularly with respect to the mind and motive of one of the criminals. As I wrote above, I devoured it in one sitting. That was two days ago and I am still thinking about it. It is a learning experience, this book. Non-fiction but enough facility with language and observation to be dressed up to read like a novel. Get through the first few, rather dense, pages. Worth it.

Leo Strauss was known for his close careful deep reading of classic Western Civilization philosophic texts. It shows here with him and his students doing a magnificent job. This book can be looked upon as a survey of the best of western thought. Now Strauss in his readings stresses taking the authors on their own terms in the context of their other works and their fellow countrymen who they are engaged in a dialogue with. We should judge them as true or false or indeterminate in our thinking about them--grapple with them and take them seriously. According to Strauss we are not to relativize them as progressing to our more enlightened modern view. In fact Strauss thinks classic political philosophy may be an aid to resolving what he takes to be our present crisis of modernity. Be that as it may these readings can be very deep such as the one on Nietzche. Eric Warwick

I am approaching this review from the viewpoint of someone who has a bit of working knowledge on the subject of political philosophy. That said, it is important to recognize the monumental achievement of this collaboration. Each author treats his particular subject with expertise, and each author lays out the important works of political philosophy by each major political theorist. The authors point out (where appropriate) the distinctions in the political writings of the philosophers (Augustine, Locke, Kant, Aquinas, Plato, Aristotle,etc), from their otherwise non-political oriented works. This is important, as not every thinker discussed is a political philosopher in the strictest sense. Rather, some of the philosophers are known primarily for their contributions in other branches of philosophy (Kant-Metaphysics, Epistemology; Descartes - metaphysics, epistemology; Locke - Epistemology; Augustine - Theology; Aquinas - Theology; etc). This is not to point out a shortcoming of the work but rather one of its greatest strengths. Five stars for an excellent and diverse treatment of highly complex subject matter. Caution: not for new comers; I would probably recommend an encyclopedia to get your feet wet before delving into this advanced work.

This book totally helped me out for a presentation in my philosophy class this semester!! It's a little big to carry to class everyday, but it's totally worth it. =)

I read the first chapter but now find it difficult to get further. It is outstanding. I had 7 years of ancient greek in school and only now, at a considerably later age, I enjoy this essay on Tukydides and the perspective to read those to come later in the book. Good times we live in, at least in thos respect.

I am an adult returning to college and taking Philosophy 100, which includes study of Plato, Hobbes, Mill, and Aristotle. Can be rough going to interpret writings such as these and professor recommended this book as secondary source. It has been a terrific complement to the course and will serve me in good stead as I continue to study other philosophers.

I have just read The Art of Being a Healing Presence once again. This is my fourth reading over several years. I first discovered this book when doing some hospice volunteer work about seven years ago. It's a deceptively simple book--really more of a booklet, with a lot of distilled wisdom for care givers. Although the context of the book for me at the time was hospice, I've found the book personally beneficial outside that context. I highly recommend this book.Healing presence is defined in the booklet on page 12 as, "...the condition of being consciously and compassionately in the present moment with another or with others, believing in and affirming their potential for wholeness, wherever they are in life." Such a lovely definition.As an adjunct teacher at community college, a number of my students are non-traditional and face many personal challenges. On occasion, I have had to be a healing presence in their lives--at least as much as I can be in the role of a teacher, listening to their stories, sometimes tragic, offering them support and an affirming belief in their ability not only to endure but to thrive.The world desperately needs more people who can be a healing presence for others. Just by the fact that you are interested in this book says you are interested in being a healing presence in people's lives. Either in a professional capacity, or just as a friend to those in your personal life, you will encounter people broken in various ways seeking a return to wholeness. May you be that healing presence for them, and may you be blessed with healing presence in your life when you need it.

Had to read this for a class and found it to be very helpful with putting presence into words on how that actually looks in life. I was calmed by the ways in which it was written--very simple, yet powerful in the sense that the author trusted the reader to put themselves into the experience of just being and living that connected lifestyle. Some dissent toward the book was that it was a bit religious at some points, but the author makes sure to open up the ideas to say that whether you are religious or not, this book is about cultivating a human connection on that basic level. You get out of it what you are open to receiving.

I strongly recommend this book to people who are caring for those who can no longer take care of themselves. I also recommend this to caregivers and family members who are receiving help through Hospice.It is filled with wonderful quotes and straightforward methods of dealing with physical discomfort to spiritual togetherness. This book also helps one to see and experience the sacredness being in the presence of another human being, whether they are a family member, close friend and yes, even with a stranger.Let me leave you with one of the many different quotes in this book; "It takes two to speak the truth ....one to speak and one to hear" by Henry David Thoreau .... This book helps you learn to listen to the one in need of healing.

I was torn between giving this three or four stars but settled on three because sometimes the language got too intense for me—too deep in the psyche.But I will reread this book often because what is said is so true in my experience of successful relationships.

The authors present a warm and inviting call to service in the form of 15 concise steps towards an understanding of what it means to be a healing presence in a caring relationship. Each short chapter holds wisdom but always with grace. Their advice, based on years of experience, never comes across heavy-handed or pedantic. Much of what the authors have to say about healing and transformation deals with the relationship between our conscious being and our subconscious and unconscious being. There are two good reasons for this in my opinion. For one thing, this makes the book instructive for a wide range of care-givers because what the authors have to say applies regardless of the specific type of care we offer. Secondly, much of the healing process that occurs between people happens on the subconscious and unconscious levels. For music practitioners coming from a traditional performance background there is much wisdom to be gained from this book. To facilitate a healing presence with music we will learn to let go of those aspects of performing music that, while effective on a stage, may interfere with the healing process. To do this requires discipline and effort. The authors remind us that “we will be called upon to use our senses, our intuition, and our whole body in ways that perhaps are not yet fully developed. Yet the more we practice being completely present, the more natural it becomes. In the case of the music practitioner, even though we are there to play the music, I believe for an effective session we must also be listening with the listener and listening to them listening to us. Energy does not flow in a single direction. We are transmitter and receiver at the same time in an infinite feedback loop. By being sensitive to the cues we detect in the listener, our music will respond accordingly and adapt to best suit the needs of the listener.

This book was originally received as a gift from our Chief Nurse Executive. It has many encouraging passages which support the value of the nursing profession. I gave a copy to each of my students as they completed their final semester in nursing school. If they read just one page, I know they will realize how extraordinary they can become.

While taking a course to become a hospice volunteer this book was recommended for reading. It proved to be a very valuable guide and I would recommend it to anyone who is thinking of becoming a volunteer. There are some great lessons to be learned and a wonderful guide and is very thought provoking. It has given me a lot to think about when I sit with my patients and I hope to be of help to them because of reading this book.

This was really great. We got two, one for a 9 year old and one for a 6 year old. They both got really into the missions. Many of the tasks the kids had to complete at each site were kind of innovative, and weren't too repetitive, so it kept their interest. Note that you're supposed to write in the book, which is why we got one for each kid and why a used copy might be dicey. Will definitely try other books in the series.

This book was essential for our successful family vacation to Paris. We brought along three "kids travel books" on our trip, and this one was the clear winner. It's written in a style that our kids preferred (speaking directly to the kids as secret agents, and not in a childish/patronizing tone), is clear enough for the kids to comprehend, and has a professional layout and pictures (not hand-drawn or cartoonish). It kept our five- and eight-year-old sons motivated to visit the city's main attractions, helped us bond as a family when we accomplished each assignment, and was not at all complicated, leaving mom and dad sane to enjoy the cultural institutions (because we're on vacation, too). My husband and I loved traveling the world before we had kids, and before we found this book, the kids were not as enthusiastic about being dragged around to unfamiliar places. This book has made it possible for us to keep up that passion. We will be buying the rest of the books in the collection and filling up our passports!

These are so much cooler than I thought they'd be! I was expecting a basic scavenger hunt with obvious clues and was just hoping that it would help my son stay focused while on our trip. Instead I found a well-written, thoughtfully-planned, unexpectedly delightful resource that adults have as much fun following as their kids. (I still am so charmed by the "extra points for meeting French dogs during your day" idea, and so was my son. We also bought the Rome one and it's just as great. I'm definitely buying these for all of our future trips, what a fantastic idea and so well-carried out.

These Mission scavenger books are amazing! I bought almost all of the cities. Wish they will publish more. The book keeps the kids entertained and learn facts of places we visit. There were interesting things us adults didn't even know. Very good quality book. When traveling, if the book is not well made, it tense to fall apart. We loved the book so much, even kept it afterwards as a keepsake. Kids make funny notes during the trip. Love love this!

Kids loved it! They had tons of fun looking for things when we were in Europe and I do think that it made the trip much more fun for them, except some of the things were incredibly hard to find and my kids are a bit stubborn and would not leave until they found all the items !

This is a truly wonderful purchase for any parent with kids up to (around) age 13 traveling abroad. We bought it for a family trip to Paris for our 9 year old to use, and you wouldn't believe the number of times his 12 and 15 year old siblings used it. It makes sightseeing such a pleasure. Instead of dragging your kids around to see the sights, they'll be dragging YOU around to earn points in hopes of becoming a "Secret International Agent." Looking forward to seeing these for more cities, including hopefully U.S. cities like Chicago, LA, San Fran and Austin. I think NYC exists already.

I am going to Paris with my grand children and I hope they will enjoy looking for the clues of the adventure. They seems to be interesting but I will be able to value it on the field. It's a pity it does not include Versailles being so close and that I think a visit to Paris with children withot going there is a mortal sin.

This book was extremely fun and useful for our visit to Paris with my 7-year-old! I'd definitely recommend it and also I will be purchasing the guides for other cities we visit.The book was worth the price, and we enjoyed the challenges at many of the major sites in Paris. However, there were challenges we didn't do (the Catacombs and the Château de Vincennes) and Versailles is not included in the book.Overall, a wonderful and fun guide book for kids!
