Extremely comprehensive text that covers the nuts & bolts up to the larger picture of what it means to own a firearm, how to defense yourself, the fundamentals & psychology of defending yourself, etc. I knocked one star as the author didn't seem to proofread well enough & there was some strange verbiage occasionally. Also, the author seemed to repeat himself several times.
Jeff Gonzalez has written an excellent training resource for both students and instructors who are looking for an in-depth resource on everything from marksmanship principles to combat mindset. This book is organized in a manner that makes it perfect as an individual subject reference. Definitely worth reading more than once. As a law enforcement firearms instructor, I am always on the lookout for information and resources that will improve the way I am able to present training to my students. Combative Fundamentals will serve as a personal reference for years to come. As with any honest review, it is important to provide honest feedback about areas that might be improved in the next edition.First, the book would benefit from pictures/photos that support the techniques that Jeff describes. Malfunction clearance techniques are one example of this concern. Second, the chapter on left-handed shooters was light on detail. As a left-handed shooter working in a department where less than 5% of the sworn members are left-handed I understand why left-handed manipulations are typically given limited coverage. Left-handed shooters adapt over time to the mechanics of the weapons they use (rifle and pistol). I found this chapter to be on par with what other authors are writing about left-handed weapon manipulation skills.I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in improving their professional knowledge of firearms, combat mindset, and weapon skills.
From the basics to very well thoughtout tactics and techniques in an easy to understand format. I recently attended a training with Jeff. He has sucessfully integrated his Seal training, law enforcement tactics and relevant techniques used by top competitors and put forward a program designed to be easily understood, adapted and utilized.If you are serious about your combat skills, mindset and the ability to manipulate your pistol or carbine, buy the book and sign up for serious training with Jeff at Trident Concepts. This isn't the everybody gets a trophy class!! It's training that will push you to your limits and may even make you re evaluate your gear/minset preparedness.
This is one of the first books I've come across that goes beyond the basics to cover the practical aspects of defensive shooting. The book would benefit from more photos and visuals but is an outstanding practical shooting manual for both the pistol and carbine.
Haven't gotten through the entire book yet, but so far this book is definitely packed with useful information for the average guy like me on how to handle my weapon correctly. Definitely recommend it.
I read this book few years ago, after participating in an introductory pistol course conducted by the author. At the time, I thought it well written and a useful reference.Since then, I've undergone several hundred hours more firearms training, some of which was again with the author, and keep coming back to this excellent resource with a deeper appreciation of its worth.Mr. Gonzales has provided us with a book that keeps on giving, in that the deeper one goes into one's own practice and development with firearms, the more information and reinforcement can be gleaned from this excellent reference book.I highly recommend it to anyone interested in, or involved with, firearms practice or training.Sincerely,Ron FlowersPolice Officer, SE Pennsylvania
Jeff Gonzales is one of the finest combat firearms instructors in the country, period. This book is a detailed study of technique, tactics, gear choices ,cleaning and other related topics for both handgun and rifle. What Jeff teaches works in real life, not just on a square range, but when you are tired, wounded and fighting for your life. While nothing replaces live instruction, this book is a good start.If I had to recommend just one combat shooting book, this is it. If you own a gun to defend yourself and your family, buy this book and study it. Get yourself some training and practice, practice, practice.
I've had the pleasure of taking Jeff's Combative Pistol and Combative Carbine classes and he definitely practices what he preaches in his book.It is a must read for any firearms instructor.I found that the rock solid foundational concepts explained in the book were easily understood and that the frequent repetitions of the practice drills built confidence and accuracy.Jeff couldn't get everything into the book so I highly recommend that after buying and reading the book, you register for and take one of his classes.
