If every culture were exactly the same as all the others, and if none of them ever changed, it might be easy for the world-wide church to structure its worship in such a way that all sorts of people could relate to it and delight in it equally well. But, of course, that is not the case. Cultures differ in place and time, and in almost every culture there are sub-cultures that complicate matters by multiplying the challenges. The Christian church is always interacting with host cultures, both to influence them and be influenced by them. The really hard part is to get the balance right (or right enough) so that the church’s celebration of the gospel may be sufficiently indigenized to a particular culture, while not co-opted by it.
