This is a VERY INFORMATIVE book to have. The writers have so much info in here to help guide you through the process of moving and living in the Dominican Republic. We'll be visiting there again this year after 13yrs and we hope it's everything they say it is when we get there. If it is, we will probably move there and become permanent residents. I would highly recommend this book to anyone needing guidance on where to look for the help you may need as an expat to be! :)

I loved this book. It is great for anyone thinking of living, or even just visiting the D.R. My wife is Dominincan and we are currently thinking about purchasing a vacation home their since we go back and forth sooooo much. This book gave me the insight as an expat and what I should expect. I feel well equipped now to begin the process. If you're just thinking about visiting, this book will help as well. You'll find this book has a little bit for everyone. I'm not big on reading, but I couldn't put this one down.

Way more than I expected!!! There are breakdowns of the major cities, the international schools there, hospitals, insurance info, general taxes and more. Even common prices for things like gas, food, property tax, water costs. Written in a very honest way and many pros/cons listed that anyone thinking of moving to the DR should know....and know it from someone who's done it! The authors are not trying to sell you on moving there, only helping you make a very informed decision. BRAVO!!!

Having visited RD many times, Ginnie's insights rang true for me. Book includes many helpful listings with addresses and phone numbers, as well as helpful advice regarding getting a driver's license, temporary residency, and dealing with the bureaucracy.

All I can say is I really wish I had met Ginnie!!!Fantastic book, well done to all involved! With my ongoing journey to live permanently in the DR, this has given me tons and tons of information to help along the way for every situation imaginable. There's even a lot of stuff written that my Dominican husband doesn't know about. I have read and tagged each section a number of times as I know I shall carry this book as my bible as I move around this amazing country. Thank you!

Great insights, easy to read, and written to be a very usable resource we'll run to often, I'm sure!

I thought this was really well done, it covers a lot of the typical daily life issues that come up. And it's much better than the other guides I found.

This is the second novel in this series by S.J. Morden and it was as good as the first one, if not better. The ending especially makes me wait anxiously for the next book to come out. Great story, great characters!

This story flows seamlessly from the first book. The characters are compelling, well developed and you really root for the good guys. The science is sound and the synopsis of some corporate behavior is compelling. I read both books in two days as I couldn't but them down. I wish there could be a third book.

I don't leave reviews ever, really, but wanted to support this book and its author. No Way got better and better as it went, and I finished it pretty amped. Good stuff.

No Way picks up almost immediately after the events of One Way and I would want it no other way. The intensity and the excitement are just as high as they were at the end of One Way, although this time Frank has some new high stakes to deal with that are vastly different than what he death with before--though they are just as deadly.Frank is now alone on Mars--or so he initially thinks--and must take on all of the responsibilities around the base in order to keep himself alive for NASA's arrival in order for him to potentially go back to Earth one day. This, of course, includes cleaning up all of the mess leftover from the violent events that occurred at the end of the first book in order to keep XO happy and to ensure Frank is able to safely leave Mars. Predictably, nothing can possibly go smoothly on this dry, lonely planet, and Frank is suddenly dealing with even more stress than he already was.Frank remains the same 'too-old-for-this' sort of man that he was in One Way, and I appreciate how consistent Morden has kept his personality. Frank has definitely had major character development throughout both books, but the core things that make him who he is, such as his somewhat standoff-ish nature and his lack of a charismatic presence, continue to shine and make him an oddly and uniquely compelling character. I also enjoyed seeing Frank's interactions with the NASA crew that arrives, as it really put him in an uncomfortable position, what with XO still essentially controlling what he can say and Frank's own moral dilemmas with the information he holds onto. I liked that Morden took into account that Frank, who had spent months alone on Mars, would have some issues being suddenly inundated with an entire crew of new people, along with his trauma from the events of the previous book. I liked that Morden focused on the mental components of the entire ordeal in addition to the rest of the plot.I mentioned in my review for the first book that the author trained as a planetary geologist, and his passion and dedication to the more technical aspects related to this story continue to shine in this book. I'm no rocket scientist myself and I can't say I have much knowledge of the specifics of how surviving on Mars would work so I can't professionally comment on it, but it appears his research is really well done and it adds so many layers of authenticity and realism that make this book all the more compelling. When something feels real, the stakes always feel higher and more personal and that's exactly what happened here. I think one of the things hat makes these books so captivating and chilling is that it all feels eerily believable. I do believe that there are people who would create companies that have such little compassion for human beings and would put them in dangerous situations.No Way is the sort of book that you can't put down. Morden has true skill in knowing how to craft each chapter and event in such a way that makes the reader fully engaged with what's happening in the present, while also constantly yearning to find out what is going to happen next. He has a simple yet sophisticated prose that is filled with foreshadowing and excellent descriptions.This is such an exciting series and I haven't been able to tear myself from the pages. I don't know if there is a third book in the works, but I desperately hope that there is because I will absolutely read it!

I read this for a book club and I have to say I absolutely hated it. The stream of consciousness writing style was annoying and I found myself just thumbing through pages to get through this story that seemed to have no point and that I could care less about.

I was really uncertain what to expect with this book. There seemed to be a lot of strong reactions, both positive and negative. After finishing the book I understand why so many people seem to despise the book, and why others (like myself) love it.Before even reaching the first page of the novel there is an acknowledgment page, well pages. The acknowledgment section is multiple pages of small print ravings. Eggers explains that you are more than welcome to skip this section. I recommend that you do not. It is long, but it is also humorous and will set the tone for the novel yet to come.A Heartbreaking Work of a Staggering Genius is about as pompously and as self-centered as the title suggests. Eggers is a twenty-something year old who not only has to find his own way in life, he is doing so while coming to terms with death and parenting his younger brother. It can be seen as a coming of age novel where the narrator has to figure out how to live with death. Or, maybe it is a novel about death where the living are brought along as side characters. Either way, the book truly is genius.It is also eccentric. If you are looking for a more traditional narrative structure or a more mature and likable main character, then you will probably passionately hate this novel. If you are looking for something that pushes the envelope, that looks at novel writing as an art form and isn't afraid to show the world in all its gory truth then you will probably love this book as much as I do.

I found the relationship between Eggers and Toph charming--pseudo father/son, but a lot more like two kids growing up together. Eggers' off the wall sense of humor was great. I loved the presents from random people to Toph on Christmas, especially Jesus. I loved Toph riding a broken bicycle to school like a scooter, because that's the kind of kid idea that goes unchecked when you're being raised by a kid.That said, the book was hard to follow at times. If I wasn't paying attention I'd suddenly become aware that the story had drifted from present day to some other memory. The paragraphs stretched on, making it feel like a million anxious thoughts stuffed into one moment. Maybe that was the point. I did get used to the pacing, but the end of the book was the ultimate test of being able to stay with the story-- a bunch of run on ideas all shoved together. I've got to say, I have no idea what the end of the book was supposed to mean.

Dave Eggers has written a personal account of his life with utmost satire and tongue-in-cheek humor. Best-selling novel and nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for non-ficiton since its publication in 1999 A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius: A Memoir Based on a True Story continues to draw readers to Eggers experience as a young adult in the early to mid 1990s and the most pivotal moments that included the most life changing -- the deaths of his parents from cancer in 1992. The book is a unique retelling of his personal journey that was not at all straight and narrow because of Eggers’ creative style of writing that may be compared to writers such as David Sedaris and Sarah Vowell that offer more than a narrative but one of much intellectual vividness.Upon reading the early pages of the book of the Preface and introduction, readers will have to adjust their lens of understanding to what they are familiar with in terms of reading a memoir. Eggers writes in a stream of conscious type of style that jumps from one thought to the next, but if one keeps a steady focus, all of the details that he provides relate to his circumstance. And he attempts to explain the direction of the book and areas that readers may want to skip or forward to the so-called meat and potato parts of his life by pages 200 to the conclusion. However, it does not hurt to read the entire book from beginning to end, especially the challenging parts of the first few chapters that guides the reader to understanding Eggers’ life after his parents’ passing, he along with his sister Beth and brother Bill became guardians to younger brother “Toph” (Christopher). Aside from the irony of his life, there is plenty of humor, especially in the chapter where is writes with much detail of the time he interviewed for the third season of MTV’s reality show “The Real World,” which he wanted so much to be a part of; one can say in addition, to this memoir the experience would have also been a form of therapy for him. It is instances such as that memorable event in his life and many other references that replays Eggers’ generation before there was Facebook or Twitter or any social media that would emerge in the next decade or two.A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius is a book of much insightfulness of the life of Dave Eggers that only he can tell. It is a story that can be read more than once because of the unique way that he shares with readers how his life was filled with unpredictability that he was able to successfully navigate despite the cracks and stepping-stones in between.

I haven't a clue why all the bad reviews. I greatly enjoyed this book.This is a wonderful memoir:genuine, cleverly written, hilarious at times while shockingly tragic at others.It's a memoir with true character and a story I will not easily forget.The ending left a little something to be desired, but this is a memoir, not a work of fiction, so it is what it is.The people who are saying this is boring clearly picked the wrong book, I think many of them didn't realize that this was a true story and not a fictional tale.
