Cara Butter is on a journey (by foot) to Key West, FL to visit the home of Ernest Hemingway. Along the way, she picks up a stray dog, whom she names Hemingway after her favorite author. Since Cara was young she has had trust issues. As a child, Cara and her twin sister, Hanna, were tossed around from foster home to foster home. They learned at an early age to not depend on anyone but each other. Along the way Cara meets caring and helpful people who start to break down the wall she has built up around herself. They help her by giving her food, clothing, shelter, a warm shower, care for her dog, a bike with a trailer for Hemi to make the journey go faster and easier. Cara learns that people are not all bad.One of the things that I loved about this book was how Cara transformed before our eyes. She was weary of people and Hemingway too, initially in the book. As the book progressed and she continued on her journey, you could almost feel her relaxing and learning to trust. I loved the unconditional love that Cara and Hemingway had, the way they depended upon each other and protected each other. Cara became this strong, self-reliant, confident young woman who realized she has so much to give to others. I highly recommend you read this book and read Cara’s story for yourself.I would like to thank NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for the advanced readers’ copy of WISH ME HOME by Kay Bratt.
Such a heartwarming story about twins who are separated by a misunderstanding. The adventure of one of them is told here as she tries to run and escape punishment for something she did not commit. Along the way she is blessed with the care of people along her way south to reach the Keys and a favorite author's home. She finds this crippled dog along the way and they bond like you can't imagine. Very lovely story of redemption and healing. I highly recommend it.
I just finished this book last night and I fell in love with all the characters Kay had created. With my own dog snuggled beside me, I traveled with Cara as she took her journey away from a situation she envisioned as catastrophic and discovered that not all those she feared in the world would harm her. What Kay was able to capture in her writing was the good in people in a time we need it most. I hope she continues this story as she has done with other novels since I want to learn more of their story and how they triumph over adversity. To prove that this was a great read, when I turned the last page, I rolled over and gave my pup a hug and to her credit, she uttered a satisfied sigh knowing I had enjoyed it very much.
My Review of “Wish Me Home†by Kay BrattKudos to Kay Bratt, Author of “Wish Me Home†for writing such an emotional, and heartwarming, sensitive and enjoyable novel. The Genres of this novel are Contemporary Fiction, Fiction, and Women’s Fiction.Kay Bratt describes her colorful characters as flawed, complex , complicated and for the most part likable. Cara and Hana are twin sisters that have been brought up in a negligent foster system for the most part. Issues such as betrayal and trust seem to be a large part of their lives. Hana seems to be the lead controlling twin, but does suffer from bouts of depression. After a traumatic situation, Cara finds herself on the road with hopes of seeing Hemingway’s home, one of her favorite authors. After her car breaks down, she is traveling with very little cash, and determination she will walk the hundreds of miles. A homeless dog is following Cara. The last thing Cara need is anything else alive to take care of, but she becomes attached and names the dog Hemi, short for Hemingway.Symbolically Cara’s physical journey turns into and emotional journey as she stumbles upon good and giving people for the most part that ask for nothing in return for their kindness. When Cara and Hana were little their one wish was to “Wish Me Homeâ€. More than anything Cara wants a home and to be loved. Is it possible for Cara to let herself find a home and love? Is it possible for Cara to be able to make her own decisions?I appreciate that Kay Bratt brings up such significant topics in today’s society such as mental illness, depression, the foster system, adoption, and seeking professional help when it is needed. I love that the author uses the example of working with animals to get their perfect home as well. This is such a wonderful book that I highly recommend to readers of Women’s Fiction and Contemporary Fiction. This is the first novel that I have read by Kay Bratt, and I look forward to reading more of her novels.
This is a sweet, but not overly sentimental story of a twin running from her past and trying to figure out life without the presence of the one person who has always been with her. The main character, Cara, is gradually revealed and developed through her encounters with a variety of people and flashbacks to childhood memories. There is light suspense as the reader waits a to discover the tramatic event that sends Cara on her hasty and unplanned trip to Key West. Through Cara's relationships with the stray dog and other characters, the author addresses issues of abandonment, complicated family issues, and depression without being sappy or preachy.
I was hoping the book would more of a dog story (he was a wonderful character). The story is primarily about the lead human and her adventures seeking an authors home and for the most part it's very good. She mentally battles with her evil twin which has brought her more grief in her life.Honestly, I was so wrapped up in this story, I could not put it down. Personally, I just didn't like the last third of the story because it hardly mentions the dog (my hero).
