There’s a lot to chew on in Amy Thielen’s memoir about her journey from home cook, to New York City restaurant line cook and back to being a home cook, again. Although there’s nary a recipe to be found in this work (for that you’ll have to buy her award-winning cookbook, “The New Midwestern Tableâ€), this book chronicles how Thielen came to develop her distinctive heartland cooking style. You don’t have to love cooking to enjoy Thielen’s love of cooking. Her story is more an exploration of how her food connects her to family, friends, community, memories and place. And she tells that story by sharing in beautiful prose (she’s also an English major) her odyssey through that food space starting with her mother’s kitchen. Thielen builds on that family history with stints as a waitress in a local diner, roughing it at a farm-to-table spread outside of her hometown at a place called Two Inlets, moving on to be a line cook at high-end New York City restaurants, before returning home to focus on her family and her cooking style. As much as I enjoyed reading this book, at times the timeline was jumbled which interrupted the narrative flow. We appreciate Thielen’s prowess in the kitchen because she tells us so, but she rarely describes people’s reactions to her food. I longed for an anecdote about how her cooking was transformative to someone other than herself.Overall, though, this is a warm and engaging story of one woman’s consuming love of food.
I loved the book, even though I'm probably not in the main target audience. If there's a kind of person who's at the other end of the scale from a "foodie", that would be me — but I do know what it's like to care about the nitty gritty, sensual detail of a thing, and want to get it _just right_, and Amy has communicated that experience in a way that I can relate to, even though cooking is really really not my world. Many of the things described were alien to me, but it didn't matter because I got caught up in the romance of it all.Buy it. Read it. It's a great fun story about a very adventurous person.
I've been a fan of Amy Thielan's since I first saw her cooking show on The Food Network. When I saw her Facebook post that she had written her memoir, I preordered it on the spot. "Give a Girl a Knife: A Memoir" did not disappoint! It filled in the missing pieces of Amy's journey from growing up in Minnesota to New York City and back again to her hometown. And the hunger reference in my review title? That is there because when you read Amy's descriptions of the food she cooks and has eaten - in luxurious detail - you will be hungry and inspired to cook something wonderful to eat.
I loved Amy Thielen's show on Food Network and was so excited for her memoir. It did not disappoint. As a fellow country girl, I appreciated her descriptions of the push and pull of going home. I practically drooled over the food she described. I feel more present in my kitchen and can also see the influences of my mom and grandmothers in my cooking after reading about her explorations of her culinary history.
Amy Thielen is incredibly likeable. I appreciate that she self-narrated her memoir. She makes some profound observations, and it has that much more impact to hear her words in her own voice. I binge-listened in a day and a half, thanks to the conversational quality. Listening to "Give a Girl a Knife" feels like listening to an old friend talk about her experiences.
As a faithful viewer of Amy’s show I was excited to read this and it did not disappoint. This girl can write as well as she can cook. You can picture her apartment in NY as well as the restaurants she worked in all the way to her beautiful home in Two Inlets which we get some glimpses of on her tv show. Can’t wait to see what she does next!!
An interesting memoir. Not as much the culinary memoir of a NYC chef, as one might expect given the hype, but a complete picture of a chef with an intriguing, unorthodox journey to and from. Terrifically enjoyable and beautifully written.
Got a little long at times but a good story. Enjoyed the cooking tips. Interesting about not making tomato sauce in an iron pot. I never did, but now I have a reason not to.
Coming from Minnesota myself and being a big time foodie and a pretty decent cook, I enjoyed this book a lot. Ms. Thielen is certainly as good with a pen as she is with a knife. The prose is great and the story very interesting.
