This book has been a game changer for me. Its coverage is comprehensive and detailed, but simultaneously clear and accessible. The explanations and illustrations combine to truly demystify the voice - and not by oversimplifying it, but by thoughtfully breaking down its parts and their functions. Its understanding of the larynx is the most profound I’ve seen yet. Anatomy of the Voice is going to be a book I return to not only for my own learning, but to reference when explaining how the voice works to other people. I’ve already ordered a second copy to send as a gift. Highly recommended!
I wish I had such a beautifully-illustrated book when I was studying vocal pedagogy years ago! I just started using this book with my university voice students in their voice lessons. I'm thrilled that they can now have a clear view into what actually goes on when we sing, instead of me describing body parts in a vacuum that they couldn't connect to. By the end of the semester I'll try to add an update.

As a recently certified teacher of the Alexander Technique (AmSAT), as well as a professional opera singer and voice teacher, I've been eagerly anticipating the release of "Anatomy of the Voice". It does not disappoint! This book along with Dr. Dimon's first voice book "Your Body Your Voice" belong on every teacher's and singer's bookshelf! "Anatomy of the Voice" presents vocal physiology in an organized, detailed yet clear manner. The book includes chapters on the anatomy of breathing, the larynx, the mouth and pharynx, the face and jaw and even the evolution of the larynx. The anatomical regions discussed are very relevant to singers and teachers like me; but let's face it, all voice users are using the same equipment.Yes, the topic is anatomy, and that can be overwhelming for many of us. The beauty of this book is you can use it as a quick reference, or dive a little deeper as your interest develops and/or needs require. Enhance your own vocal anatomical knowledge or use it as a teaching tool. Anyone who has sat through a vocal pedagogy or vocal science class knows this can be a very dry topic. I wish I had this book when I started on my journey into the anatomy of the voice. Of note are G. David Brown's beautiful color illustrations which are well chosen to enhance the text and can be very helpful to visual learners.
This is by far the best book I've seen about vocal anatomy for singers, for vocal teachers (like myself), for anyone who really wants to understand how the voice works. The illustrations are fantastic. They make sense! And they show you the parts that are normally hidden in images of the vocal process, so you can see how muscles and cartilages are connected, how they work together, or in antagonism. Anything you need to know is covered: all aspects of breathing, pressure at the vocal folds, all the complex muscles in the larynx, what's happening when a singer is straining, etc etc. The text is clear, easy to understand, and explains aspects of what happens when we sing in ways that make it simple to get. Wow!Frankly I'm surprised to be this excited about a book. I'm an author myself ("Belting," "Your Singing Voice") and so I'm particular. I don't usually get this excited! I couldn't recommend a book any higher. If you really want to understand how the voice works, you won't be disappointed.
This book is an incredible accomplishment. It's the first I've found that is written expressly for voice professionals with clear illustrations and explanations of breathing and voice production. This is an important reference book for any singer; easy to flip through, with big images and a centerfold of the larynx musculature!! SO COOL. As a voice teacher at a musical theater conservatory in NYC, this book is now always with me, at the ready to demonstrate a point about anatomy or physiology. I would recommend both of Dr. Dimon's voice books - this and Your Body Your Voice - as mandatory reading for every singer.
