Grade 9 Up-This resource was created as a companion to the Gale Encyclopedia of Multicultural America (1995), which provides histories of the individual immigrant and minority groups in the U.S., and the 90 groups examined in that reference are represented here. The set is arranged alphabetically by group; documents within each of these sections are arranged chronologically. The 210 entries include letters, poems, oral histories, autobiographies, political cartoons, periodical articles, recipes, speeches, descriptions of crafts, and photographs. An essay providing historical context precedes each document and source information follows. More than 80 black-and-white photographs, illustrations, and maps accompany the text. Each volume includes a comprehensive table of contents; volume two includes the complete set index. The books have wide margins, bold headings, and guide words at the top of each page. Primary Documents offers personal perspectives into the key events and everyday lives of different ethnic groups and individuals. This new set from Gale is a companion to an earlier work, Gale Encyclopedia of Multicultural America [RBB D 1 95], but focusing on primary documents rather than a description of the history and culture of the many indigenous or immigrant ethnic groups in America. It parallels the format of the earlier work: the entries are in alphabetical order by the common name of the group, and the pages are large, which makes the text visually pleasing. Preface, table of contents, and credits are in both volumes; the index is found only in volume two. There is no overall bibliography, but the credits list most of the original sources, and pertinent bibliographic information appears at the end of each document.Each entry begins with an introduction that includes a brief history of the group's nation of origin and the U.S.'s varied foreign policies related to or treatment of the group. Each separate document also has an introduction. There are more than 20 document types: letters, journals, interviews, poems, songs, informational articles, Web pages, legislation, speeches, photographs, and so forth. They average 2,000 words in length, although a few are significantly shorter or longer. The people to whom the documents are attributed represent a good cross section of age groups, economic status, and time periods (from the fifteenth century to 1999). The photographs are black and white and about half a page in size. They enhance the text and do not overpower the importance of the words.There are a few problems with this work. Some of the documents stretch the meaning of "primary." For example, there is only one entry for the Amish, and it is a travel article about Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, that appeared in the New York Times. The only entry for Spanish Americans is a map showing "major paths of early European penetration of the United States." Proofreading in the age of spell-check remains a problem. Many words are misspelled: feel instead of feed, unit instead of until, dummer rather than summer.These problems aside, this is a fine work that most libraries will want, especially school libraries that have multicultural curricula and those that purchased the original Gale Encyclopedia of Multicultural America.
