This is a fantastical adventure! I felt like I was part of each event in person. The characters were full of humanity even with their incredible gifts. Excellent descriptions. Vivid word use. Loved both books in the series!

This started stronger than it finished, and I don't think it was as good as the first book, Markswoman. I think the big issue here is that a lot of those standardized YA Fantasy tropes Mehrotra managed to avoid in book one, had a full throttle, pedal to the medal presence here. The romance was a huge focus this time around. For the record, I hate complaining that romance exists in a book- because I actually like romance. Claire and Jamie, Edward and Elizabeth, Elizabeth and Darcy, truly, it's a favorite theme of mine. What I don't like, is when we spend pages and pages straight up day dreaming of the significant other. That was how this romance often felt. There are barriers to Kyra's relationship with Rustan, but none of them ever felt all that challenging.Another one of the things that I loved in Markswoman, was that Kyra never felt like a special snowflake to me in the first book. She made mistakes, she became an outcast, etc. Here special snowflake syndrome is alive and swinging. I can't say much without spoilers, but every single scene felt like it was dedicated to how special, how much better/braver/stronger/smarter she was then everyone else. I did a lot of eyerolling.Finally- this novel requires a lot of suspension of disbelief. The relationships between these people were just not believable. Kyra upends centuries of fear and tradition regarding the wyr-wolves for no other reason than that she's the Mahimata of the Order of Kali. All the elders and other clans just sort of accept her rule. She's enlisted to lead a war despite never having been in one and only being like 18/19 years old. I was just kind of sick of it all at the end.Despite all this, there were still parts I enjoyed. The introduction of the wyr-wolves was wonderful and probably my favorite part. The overall plot wasn't bad, even if it was wholly unbelievable and a little generic. There were a lot of great ideas at play, the hall of mirrors, the Sahirus, the hub and transport system. It was also a very quick read- and I tend to be more forgiving of those. The ending was both abrupt and bizarre. Nothing was really explained. Kyra and Rustan got an ending but literally no one else. This book really needed a conclusion or an epilogue of some sort to make it feel complete. I reviewed an advance copy so it's entirely possible my copy simply didn't have it, but I was definitely left wanting more (and not really in a good way).If you enjoyed the first book, it's probably worth reading the second just to see how it all ends. I'll be curious to see what Mehrotra does now that this duology is complete. Thank you to Edelweiss and Harper Collins for providing me with an eARC to review.

After killing the usurper who murdered the former Mahimata and seeing justice served, Kyra Veer has returned to the Order of Kali to rest and recuperate. Unfortunately, Kyra must acknowledge how much has changed since she’s been away: her teacher is still dead, one of her best friends went missing and is still unaccounted for, and Rustan, the Marksman who trained her in preparation for her duel is gone – they had formed a much deeper bond than just trainer and trainee.Rustan, after questioning the killing of an innocent man as well as shaken by his developing feelings for Kyra, has imposed a penance upon himself. He’s left the Order of Kuhr to travel Asiana looking for answers to questions he doesn’t yet understand. This leads him to discovering and ancient sect tied to the mysterious Ones that left the world eons ago. Before either Kyra or Rustan can settle themselves, it becomes apparent that the time to fight for Asiana is now. And the time for Kyra to avenge her murdered family is quickly approaching as the man responsible for their deaths, Kai Tau, is the same one who is leading an army to desolate the land of Asiana. How much of themselves will Kyra and Rustan have to sacrifice in order to ensure that Asiana lives on?I don’t typically get a chance to do a reread before delving into the next book in any series, so I really appreciated how easy is was to slide right back into the very complex and interesting world created by Rati Mehrotra here.I struggled a bit trying to figure out where the story was going to take us and I think, for the most part, this is an apt description of how the characters felt as well for a good majority of the book.I felt like both Rustan and Kyra are struggling with what happens next. Where to go from where they’ve been, so to speak. Of course the main conflict on the horizon is the inevitable battle with Kai Tau. But before that both Rustan and Kyra have to find peace in what their futures hold. For Kyra, this is the mythical “door” she has seen at various times in visions and dreams. It’s been a background fear for Kyra for a while now, and I think it’s one of those things where once you conquer your fear then you reach enlightenment.I really loved how Rati Mehrotra built up the relationship between Rustan and Kyra. Their star-crossed love of sorts is sweet, but I really enjoyed seeing how often their goals didn’t align, yet they still hold love for each other even with the opposition. In the end, they’ll still fight on the same side even if they’re each getting to that side by different means, means which they each might not understand, but still encouraging one another even if it takes them away from each other. It’s bittersweet, yet beautiful all at once.In reading Mahimata I didn’t really find the ending to be too surprising. I think if you’ve read the first book, and as you’re reading this one, it’s built up in a way that the ending is expected, but it’s seeing the journey that’s the real treat. At the start, it felt like the beginning of the end, and Mahimata definitely provides an ending to this duology. I would love if Rati Mehrotra revisited this world because it’s certainly full of history and mystery I’d love to have explored more.

Amazon.com Review

Whether by nature or by nurture, Ma and Pa Sedaris certainly knew something about raising funny kids. Amy Sedaris has built a cult following for her Comedy Central character Jerri Blank, and David, the more famous of the two siblings, continues to spin his personal history into comedic gold. A good chunk of the material in Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim debuted in other media outlets, such as The New Yorker, but Sedaris's brilliantly written essays deserve repeat reads. Based on the author's descriptions, nearly every member of his family is funny, although some (like sister Tiffany, perhaps) in a tragic way. In "The Change in Me," Sedaris remembers that his mother was good at imitating people when it helped drive home her point. High-voiced, lovably plain-spoken brother Paul (aka The Rooster, Silly P) has long been a favorite character for Sedaris readers, though Paul's story takes on a serious note when his wife has a difficult pregnancy. The author doesn't shy away from embarrassing moments in his own life, either, including a childhood poker game that strays into strange, psychological territory. Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim provides more evidence that he is a great humorist, memoirist, and raconteur, and readers are lucky to have the opportunity to know him (and his clan) so well. His funny family feels like our own. Perhaps they are luckier still not to know him personally. --Leah Weathersby

From Publishers Weekly

In his latest collection, Sedaris has found his heart. This is not to suggest that the author of Me Talk Pretty One Day and other bestselling books has lost his edge. The 27 essays here (many previously published in Esquire, G.Q. or the New Yorker, or broadcast on PRI's This American Life) include his best and funniest writing yet. Here is Sedaris's family in all its odd glory. Here is his father dragging his mortified son over to the home of one of the most popular boys in school, a boy possessed of "an uncanny ability to please people," demanding that the boy's parents pay for the root canal that Sedaris underwent after the boy hit him in the mouth with a rock. Here is his oldest sister, Lisa, imploring him to keep her beloved Amazon parrot out of a proposed movie based on his writing. ("'Will I have to be fat in the movie?' she asked.") Here is his mother, his muse, locking the kids out of the house after one snow day too many, playing the wry, brilliant commentator on his life until her untimely death from cancer. His mother emerges as one of the most poignant and original female characters in contemporary literature. She balances bitter and sweet, tart and rich—and so does Sedaris, because this is what life is like. "You should look at yourself," his mother says in one piece, as young Sedaris crams Halloween candy into his mouth rather than share it. He does what she says and then some, and what emerges is the deepest kind of humor, the human comedy. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

I love David Sedaris especially when he is writing about his family or his partner, Hugh. He is SO funny! His performance of his work is the best way to experience his writing. (So, get the audio books!) I first heard him on public radio (NPR) but I know he performs his work live on tour as well. I will say that while most of his work is not at all offensive, there are a few essays here and there on this audio book and others of his, that have graphic sexual content (i.e. when he was cleaning apartments for a living a man openly masturbated and watched porn in front of him) or language (i.e. when quoting someone else, usually his little brother) that some people may not find tasteful. I think he is a talented writer with a uniquely hilarious American voice that should not be missed.

At least it is for David Sedaris. The second oldest of a large brood (the term is particularly fitting here), he and his siblings clung together for dear life. Born into an uneasy marriage, both parents shell-shocked from their own miserable childhoods, the Sedaris kids had only each other. In adulthood, they continue to bicker and cling in an endless cycle of love and rejection and exasperation and need. All of them are outsiders, trying with greater or lesser success to fit into a world that was never a good fit to begin with. Would they have been happier or more content or felt more at home if the family had remained in New York State? The author remembers the move to North Carolina as a watershed event. From that point on, it was the Greeks against the Rednecks and the Rednecks outnumbered them by a wide margin.Or was it simply that Lou and Sharon Sedaris had unrealistic expectations of middle-class life. Children of the Great Depression, they believed that his engineering career and the suburban house and country club membership it afforded would make them happy. Middle-class families in ads always LOOK happy, don’t they? This is a typical David Sedaris book. He mines snarky humor from his family’s pain and confusion, past and present. His father’s anger, his mother’s depression, his siblings’ tragedies and triumphs, and his own career as the geekiest, most miserable teen in the history of the human race. All are grist for the mill.We see him as a child, basking in his mother’s charm and casual acceptance while sensing her unhappiness. Then we see him as a grown man, his mother dead and beyond his help. His father very much alive and as obliviously cruel as ever. His long, happy partnership with a man who’s as unlike him as chalk and cheese. They have nothing in common but love.A born writer writes because he MUST. To record the events of his life - even the horrible ones - is the only way he can deal with them. Sedaris laughs at himself and his troubles and absurdities and he generously invites us to laugh along with him. What could be better? My favorite chapter is “Slumus Lordicus” in which Lou and Sharon embark on an ill-fated (what else?) attempt to build an empire of rental property and become wealthy. It can be done and HAS been done, but not by two people who lack the savvy to spot a potentially disastrous tenant or the moxie to deal with one after the fact. The Empire didn’t make the family rich, but it did provide tender bonding moments for father and son as they fight to the death over Lou’s campaign to use his oldest son as slave labor and as they team up to pit themselves (always pathetically) against their common enemies - the wily tenants. It’s classic Sedaris and humor doesn't get any better than that.

I love David Sedaris. I also love that he's from my hometown, though (1) I've never met him, and (2) I didn't know that until after I'd started following his writing career. In this collection, he mentions Binghamton twice. But that little thrill is secondary to the impact of these essays. I realize this is an older book -- I recently read his newest -- but it was part of a gap in my Sedaris reading. As usual, he springs a lot of surprises. And he is searingly open about his life and himself. And yet, he laughs, and invites us to laugh with him. What a generous gift.

I admire the way David Sedaris can spin a yarn, but I find him too dislikable to ever read another of his books. I was particularly disturbed by his telling of his compulsion to want to touch peoples’ heads — especially a young boy’s — and in the cruel manner in which he dispatched from life a suffering mouse. C’mon, David, just end the poor thing’s life already. Don’t be such a wuss. If I ever read another Sedaris tome, it will be to pick up writing style tips. His manner is colorful and descriptive, and the scenes he paints appear vividly in my mind. That part I like.

This is a great book! David Sedaris always makes me laugh out loud and I just love every story he writes. I didn't want to put this book down and I didn't want it to end. I love the titles of his books too-he's such a unique writer and the way he describes things makes you able to really picture the scene and feel like you're transported there. His stories are funny, interesting and so different from anything else I've read.

Every single book that I've read of David Sedaris is laugh out loud hilarious. I tried reading this on a flight in which I didn't have a travel partner, so I'm quite sure the passengers around me thought I had lost it by the time we arrived at our destination because I was laughing myself to tears.

David Sedaris' take on life is just a little left of center. He is droll and entertaining in this collection of stories that mostly focus on his family's loony adventures and skewed sense of the world. I'm really glad he is not my brother because the man has no mercy in his depictions of his sisters, brother and parents. No one escape's unscathed, not his boyfriend Hugh or their eighty year old neighbor or David himself. Some of the stories are laugh out loud funny, others are more than a little gross, but like a bad accident you can't help but look (or read). I have to say that my first book by Sedaris was When You are Engulfed in Flames, and it was an audio. As much as I enjoyed reading this book, I realize that something is lost when reading this as opposed to listening, and it is Sedaris' inflections and pauses and dry tone that make him such a great storyteller. So I liked it a lot- but would have loved to listen to it.

David Sedaris can bring out a smile, a laugh or a though provoking smirk no matter if he is writing about a mouse or a wedding. His comic intelligence is so superior and fun at the same time.

This review is for the kindle version!I'm currently a CA-1 (1st year anesthesiology resident) who needed a good read to not look stupid preparing for my case the next day with my attending. For that, it's great! It goes over all the possible complications, the types of blocks and anesthesia that can be used, common concerns, positioning, etc that will make you look prepared and able to answer most of the basic questions you'll be pimped on about the case. It also covers almost EVERY type of surgery that you'll encounter as a CA-1 and even as just an anesthesiologist. For the text itself, I give it 4 stars. I don't give it 5 because some of the recommendations may not apply at your institution. For instance, it'll recommend placing an epidural or a peripheral catheter for a case. At my institution, we have a policy where no catheters are to be placed pre-op or intra-op, so although those options may not by explicitly useful, you can still do the relevant block. What REALLY brings this review down to 3 stars is the usability on kindle. GET THE ACTUAL BOOK!!! It is EXTREMELY difficult to use on kindle. There's no table of contents that you can click that will take you directly to the page you want. It also groups procedures, so it'll tell you what kind of anesthesia to use for a group of surgeries (for instances all surgeries below the knee) but you have to wait till it describes the last surgery in that group before it covers it. So you're stuck swiping and swiping and swiping waiting to find that part. It's just very very clumsy, difficult, and frustrating to use, and I've been using ebooks for a while. But I think that's the fault of Kindle, if it was an ibooks product, it'd be great.Overall, GREAT text, horrible platform on kindle. BUY THE TEXT! You won't regret it.

Jaffe's is a good book for clinical practice. As most books, and maybe in this case even more than most books, it's a bit flawed by each chapter author's personal preference, rather than science based reasoning. But then again, that's what this book is all about. To give you one way of attacking a specific surgical procedure. Not every way, or even the best way, just one way. But that's a good starting point from where one can the modify management as needed. This is not a book for seasoned private practice anesthesiologists, but I think it's a great resource for residents.

It is a nice book to review that procedure you do not use to make so offen. I bought the digital version and found it to be a litle bit on the expensive side compared with a big textbook like Barash for example. The menus of the digital version could be way much better and it makes search of the desidred topic a litle bit slower than you wish, not to mention difficult. 3 stars is the best i could give. I searched the renal transplantation topic for example and found it to be a litle bit on the shy side. It's a book for those who already have lots of books and wish to have one that can point specificly to a certain kind of procedure. One thing that i like is the estimation of blod loss for each procedure.

Incredibly useful for anesthesia residents, especially in your first year. This book provides some basic information about the procedures, surgical considerations (positioning, EBL, abx, M&M, etc), and anesthetic considerations (pre-op, intra-op, and post-op). Obviously, you will have to learn about your surgeon-specific preferences/considerations, but this is an excellent source to obtain general background. As a CA-1, I use this all the time. I'll update this when I'm further on in my training to comment on how useful it continues to be.

A "cookbook" approach to administering an anesthetic. I frequently refer to it--I have the Kindle version on my iPad--when I am called to administer an anesthetic for a procedure I've not seen before or haven't done in a while. I used an earlier version during my fellowship, and would often answer the surgeons' questions for the surgical residents before they could. This is not a standalone guide to anesthesiology, but a useful adjunct. I recommend it to all the medical students I encounter who are planning to serve a residency in anesthesiology.

Awesome book, kindle version is terrible. It will say "see page ____" but there are no pages in the kindle version. Buy hard copy

I think it's a little expensive but it's worth it. It has a completely different approach from other books and lets you focus in particular procedures in a very fast and concise way

just as described! quick shipping! thanks! great book!
